The main ownership risk to watch is the engine-reliability concern mentioned by some owners, so a careful service-history check is worthwhile.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Preferred trim gives you the core value story, including LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, cloth seats, heated front seats, keyless entry, split/reclining second-row seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a broad set of standard driver-assistance features. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, with the top Calligraphy bringing Nappa leather seats, a surround-view camera, and Hyundai’s blind view monitor system.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, with the Preferred using the naturally aspirated version and the Urban and Ultimate Calligraphy getting a turbocharged version. The non-turbo engine makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbo raises output to 281 hp and 311 pound-feet.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist comes standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.
• Infotainment: All trims get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, BlueLink connected services, voice recognition, and dual front and rear USB ports. Wireless device charging is limited to the top two trims, and Ultimate Calligraphy adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo version returns combined fuel economy of 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres, while the turbo version delivers 10.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Urban, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value play if you want the Santa Fe’s core strengths without stretching the budget. You still get the standard safety suite, heated front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and the practical everyday equipment that makes this model appealing.
• Urban: This is the best fit if you want the turbocharged engine and a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top trim. It adds leatherette seating surfaces, an 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
• Luxury: This trim is the bridge to a more premium cabin, with a fully digital instrument cluster and a proximity-activated smart liftgate. It is also the hybrid or plug-in hybrid-only trim in Canada.
• Ultimate Calligraphy: Choose this if you want the most complete Santa Fe experience, including the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless device charging, Nappa leather seats, a surround-view camera, blind view monitor, and the 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, while Highway Driving Assist is reserved for Ultimate Calligraphy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market if you’re shopping carefully.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 433 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,838 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?

The current average of $29,838 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,153 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Santa Fe easier to buy now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that also means resale expectations should be set with the current softer pricing in mind. If demand stays steady, the model’s broad appeal and value positioning should help support used-market interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe received the highest-possible five-star overall rating from NHTSA and Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Santa Fe comes with a broad standard safety suite that includes forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist is standard on Ultimate Calligraphy. The main caveat is that the projector-type headlights in the top trim were rated more favourably than the reflector-type units in lower trims.

Should I buy a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It delivers strong value, standard safety features, and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $41,173 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $29,838 CAD average.
• It brings a fully redesigned look with a longer wheelbase and standard third-row seats.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2023 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for the redesign and added space, the 2024 is the more distinctive choice. Price-sensitive buyers should start with the 2023 and focus on well-equipped trims.
