What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canadian lineup includes Preferred, Urban, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy. The base trim gives you the essentials, but the higher trims add more upscale cabin materials, a larger digital instrument cluster, and extra convenience features.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder in Preferred, while Urban and Ultimate Calligraphy use a turbocharged version with much stronger output. The turbo model is the better pick if you want more confident passing and merging.
• Safety package: The Santa Fe includes forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist comes standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.
• Infotainment: All trims get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, traffic information, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, BlueLink connected services, voice recognition, and dual front and rear USB ports. Wireless device charging is limited to the top two trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo version returns 9.9 L/100 km combined, while the turbo engine is rated at 10.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Urban, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you AWD, heated front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a strong safety feature set. If you want the lowest entry price and don’t need the extra power or luxury touches, this is the one to start with.
• Urban: This is the best-value upgrade if you want the turbocharged engine and more comfort-focused equipment without jumping to the top end. It adds leatherette seating surfaces, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
• Luxury: This trim is the step up for buyers who want a more premium feel, including a fully digital instrument cluster and a proximity-activated smart liftgate. It is also the hybrid or plug-in hybrid path in Canada, so it suits you if efficiency matters more than outright performance.
• Ultimate Calligraphy: This is the most luxurious choice, with Nappa leather seats, a surround-view camera, Hyundai’s blind view monitor system, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. It’s the right pick if you want the most upscale Santa Fe experience.

Safety equipment is broad across the range, but Highway Driving Assist is standard only on Ultimate Calligraphy.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 448 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.53% compared with last year.

What is the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?

The current average of $29,709 CAD sits slightly below last year's $33,580 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Santa Fe is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you own one and plan to sell later, the recent decline means you may need to price competitively to stand out. On the other hand, the model’s strong value reputation and broad appeal can help support demand if your vehicle is well equipped and well maintained.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Santa Fe comes with a broad suite of standard driver-assistance features, including forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist is standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.

The expert review also notes that the projector-type headlights in Ultimate Calligraphy are rated more favourably than the reflector-type units in lower trims. That means you should pay attention to trim choice if you want the strongest lighting setup.

Should I buy a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.53% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year keeps the Santa Fe’s value-focused formula, standard safety features, and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $40,806 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $29,709 CAD average.
• It brings a fully redesigned look with a bolder, more distinctive shape.

The bottom line: If you want the better value proposition, the 2023 is the smarter buy. If you’re willing to pay more for a full redesign and a fresher design direction, the 2024 is the better alternative. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2023’s softer pricing makes it the easier recommendation.
