Owners consistently praise its comfort, advanced features, and strong value, and many also like the luxury-SUV feel created by the technology and safety equipment. The user feedback also points to a smooth, enjoyable driving experience, especially in AWD models, while noting some concerns about engine reliability.

From our expert evaluation, the Santa Fe fits well if you want a practical midsize two-row SUV with strong value, standard safety features, and easy-to-use technology. The main trade-offs are the underwhelming base engine and the lack of an N-Line performance variant, so it is less appealing if you want a sportier character.

Hyundai’s value proposition is strengthened by low maintenance costs and a five-year, 100,000-kilometre comprehensive warranty with unlimited roadside assistance for the same period.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some owners have raised engine reliability concerns, so service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Canadian lineup includes Preferred, Urban, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy. The base Preferred is the value play, but it misses some of the richer cabin and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
• Powertrain: The Preferred uses a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the Urban and Ultimate Calligraphy use a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine with 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet. The turbo version feels much stronger in everyday driving.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist comes standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.
• Infotainment: All trims get a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation and traffic information, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, BlueLink connected services, voice recognition, and dual front and rear USB ports. The Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy add a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and wireless device charging is reserved for the top two trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The non-turbo model returns 9.9 L/100 km combined, while the turbo version returns 10.0 L/100 km combined.

Which 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Urban, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy.

Here's the short version:

• Preferred: This is the best-value starting point if you want the Santa Fe’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get AWD, heated front seats, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a strong list of standard driver-assistance features.
• Urban: Choose this if you want the turbocharged engine and a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top trim. It adds leatherette seating surfaces, a power-adjustable passenger seat, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
• Luxury: This trim is the step up for buyers who want the fully digital instrument cluster and a more premium convenience set. It is available in Canada only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, so it is not part of the standard gas model lineup.
• Ultimate Calligraphy: This is the most luxurious gas trim, with the turbo engine, 20-inch alloy wheels, Nappa leather seats, a surround-view camera, Hyundai’s blind view monitor system, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

Highway Driving Assist comes standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 429 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.35% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $29,960 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?

The current average of $29,960 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,574 CAD.

That price movement suggests the Santa Fe has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for a future seller to attract interest if the vehicle is well maintained. A softer market today can also mean less immediate upside for resale, but it may help keep the model competitive against similarly priced rivals.

Because the Santa Fe has strong value, standard safety equipment, and broad appeal, it should remain easy to position in the used market if you keep mileage and condition in check.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe received the highest-possible five-star overall rating from NHTSA and earned Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction-turning detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centring assist, driver monitoring, safe-exit assist, and a rear-seat reminder system. Highway Driving Assist comes standard on Ultimate Calligraphy.

The lower trims do not get Highway Driving Assist, so that feature is reserved for the top trim.

Should I buy a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.35% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the value-focused, safety-rich formula before the full redesign arrives for 2024.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $41,529 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $29,960 CAD average.
• It brings a bold redesign with standard third-row seating.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and a proven package, the 2023 is the smarter buy. If you want the newer design and can stretch your budget, the 2024 is the more distinctive choice. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2023 remains the more compelling path.
