What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX, GS, Kuro, and GT are the value-focused trims, while the Sport Design and Signature move the CX-5 further upmarket. The Signature stands out with premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents, while the top trim also gets body-colour lower exterior trim. If you want the most premium feel, the Signature is the one to target.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged version is the pick if you want stronger acceleration. All CX-5s have standard all-wheel drive, and Mazda revised the six-speed automatic for more responsive performance.
• Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a 10.25-inch display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, and Mazda Connected Services. The screen is not touch-sensing, and the system does not have natural voice recognition, so you’ll use the centre-console and steering-wheel controls.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard powertrain is rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, or 9.0 L/100 km when cylinder deactivation is equipped. The turbocharged engine is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 6 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro, GT, Sport Design, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price, including standard all-wheel drive and the full i-Activsense safety suite.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it keeps the CX-5’s premium feel while staying on the more affordable side of the range.
• Kuro: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and the added Mi-Drive drive mode selector with Normal, Sport, and Off-Road settings.
• GT: This is the trim to consider if you want a stronger mix of comfort and equipment, including adaptive headlights and optional Bose audio.
• Sport Design: This is the best choice if you want the turbocharged engine available and a more performance-oriented feel without jumping straight to the top trim.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium cabin materials and the most complete safety and convenience equipment.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the extra driver-assistance features are reserved for the GT and Signature.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.

• Deal availability: 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 676 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.02% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,209 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $28,209 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,007 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if the vehicle is well kept. At the same time, the lower current average means resale expectations should be more measured than they were a year ago.

Strong demand for well-equipped, safety-focused compact SUVs should still help the CX-5 hold appeal. A clean example with desirable trim content and good maintenance history should remain easier to move than a less desirable alternative.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.

One useful detail is that blind-spot warnings can appear in the head-up display when equipped, which helps keep your eyes on the road. The main caveat is that the more advanced safety features are reserved for the upper trims.

Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Mazda’s updates give this year a more premium feel, stronger dynamics, and excellent safety.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,705 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,209 CAD average.
• It adds tech updates and a new Kuro Edition while keeping the CX-5’s family-friendly appeal.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $30,272 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,209 CAD average.
• It stays stylish and polished, but changes are minimal beyond a new paint option.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the sweet spot if you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and premium feel. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better budget play; if you want a newer model year and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is the alternative.
