What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Toyota RAV4?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Trail grade and TRD Off-Road package add a more rugged look, including matte black 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lights, red interior accents, and a TRD front skid plate. Lower trims are more basic, and material quality does not rise dramatically with price.
• Powertrain: The gasoline model uses a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. You can get front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and the engine is tuned more for efficiency than excitement.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard.
• Infotainment: Most trims get a 7-inch touchscreen, while Trail and Limited models get an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: Front-wheel drive models average 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres combined. All-wheel drive versions range from 7.9 L/100 km combined on the LE to 8.5 L/100 km combined on the Trail TRD Off-Road.

Which 2021 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 5 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited, Trail, and RAV4 Prime.

Here's the short version:

• LE: This is the value-focused starting point, and it gives you the core RAV4 experience with standard safety tech and smartphone connectivity. If you want the lowest entry price and do not need extra equipment, this is the trim to start with.
• XLE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it opens the door to more equipment and also gets the gasoline-only Premium package. If you want a more rounded daily driver without jumping to the highest trims, this is the one to focus on.
• Limited: This is the most upscale gas model, with the larger 8-inch screen and the most premium feel in the lineup. It suits you if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping the budget tight.
• Trail: This is the pick if you want the more rugged styling and the available TRD Off-Road package. It adds the outdoorsy look and capability-focused hardware, but it is also the priciest gas-only model.
• RAV4 Prime: This plug-in hybrid sits apart from the gasoline lineup and is the most powerful and most expensive choice. It makes sense if you want the strongest performance and do not mind paying more.

The safety package is standard across the lineup, but headlight performance varies by trim level, so it is worth checking the exact equipment on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Toyota RAV4?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some confidence if you are willing to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 727 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $30,144 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Toyota RAV4's resale value?

The current average of $30,245 CAD sits slightly below last year's $31,504 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. The RAV4’s broad appeal, strong owner satisfaction, and reputation for reliability should help support demand over time. Even so, resale value will depend heavily on trim, condition, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Toyota RAV4 safe?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal and rollover crash tests, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic high beams, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is also standard. One caveat is that the RAV4 missed the highest IIHS rating because some headlights earned weaker scores on certain trims.

Should I buy a 2021 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 29.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.00% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 keeps the current-generation RAV4 fresh while adding the Prime plug-in hybrid to the lineup.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $28,168 CAD, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $30,245 CAD average.
• It offers broad configuration choice, including rugged and luxury-leaning trims.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $32,204 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $30,245 CAD average.
• It brings a more mature, polished feel with a roomy, flexible interior.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and proven appeal, the 2021 is the sensible default. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping much of the same core appeal. If you want to spend more for a newer-feeling example, the 2022 is the natural step up.
