Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that appeals strongly to a specific kind of buyer. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.

Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and aesthetics, and they also highlight improved ride quality along with useful features like heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The 4Runner’s rugged, practical character fits buyers who want a utility-focused SUV with real trail credentials and plenty of cargo space.

The trade-offs are clear: poor handling, sluggish performance, and poor fuel economy. It also feels dated compared with newer rivals, especially if you care about technology and on-road polish.

With 25.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if this is the right kind of SUV for your needs.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, with praise for its strong reputation, spaciousness, and durability. That kind of feedback matters if you want something you can count on over the long term.

The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation, describing the 4Runner as reliable and durable. It is the sort of SUV that can make sense for used buyers who value toughness and consistency more than refinement.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related compromises may show up in comfort, efficiency, and day-to-day polish.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The TRD Pro stands out with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tyres, and a beefy tubular roof rack, while the Limited adds a surround-view camera system. The base setup is much more old-school, with an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, an analog instrument panel, and traditional gear selector and transfer case levers.
• Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-litre V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. It is capable off-road, but it feels slow on pavement and can sound strained under acceleration.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system.
• Infotainment: You get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the touchscreen is only eight inches and can be challenging to use while driving.
• Fuel efficiency: It is rated at 14.8 L/100 km in the city, 12.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 13.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: TRD Pro and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Limited: This is the better-value choice if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness with a more upscale convenience feature set. It adds the surround-view camera system, which is a useful upgrade for daily driving and parking.
• TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most serious off-road attitude and equipment. It comes with underbody skid plates, all-terrain tyres, a beefy tubular roof rack, and the surround-view camera system.

The safety package includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning, with the TRD Pro and Limited also getting a surround-view camera system.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 147 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.57% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $55,640 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $57,864 CAD sits slightly below last year's $63,288 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests future sellers may face some pressure if the market continues to favour newer, more efficient SUVs. The 4Runner’s age and dated technology may limit how quickly values rebound unless demand for rugged, body-on-frame SUVs stays strong.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection from NHTSA, five-star ratings for side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives it a Good rating for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes incomplete results with Marginal and Poor findings.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also come with a surround-view camera system.

The mixed crash-test results, especially the small overlap frontal findings, are the main safety caveat to keep in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 25.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It remains a rugged, off-road-capable SUV with strong reliability and durability.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $54,882 CAD, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $57,864 CAD average.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.

Consider the 2025 if:

• At $71,615 CAD, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $57,864 CAD average.
• It brings a redesigned, more powerful and more efficient 4Runner with a hybrid option.

The bottom line: If you want the current model-year 4Runner at a softer price, the 2024 is the sensible pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2023 offers a lower entry point, while the 2025 is the better choice if you want the newer design and can stretch your budget.
