Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its technology, comfort, and stylish design, along with the customisable features and high-quality sound system. It also fits buyers who want a midsize luxury SUV that feels broadly appealing rather than narrowly focused, and the lineup’s range of variants gives you flexibility if you want to tailor the vehicle to your needs. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE reliable?

Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a vehicle that many people find dependable in day-to-day use, with strong satisfaction around comfort, technology, and overall ownership experience. The expert evaluation also describes the base GLE 350’s ordinary coil-sprung setup as the most sensible choice for reliability because it avoids expensive air-suspension hardware. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the more complex higher trims can bring more costly systems to maintain.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GLE line spans a wide range of equipment and character, from the more straightforward base setup to much more lavish and technically complex versions. The interior quality is a major strength, but you may need to move up the range to feel truly rich, and the coupe body style is a distinct choice if you want something more expressive.
• Powertrain: The GLE 350 uses a 255 hp four-cylinder, while higher trims add more power and complexity, including a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six and AMG variants. The lineup also uses hybrid assistance on most versions, and the more powerful models can feel heavier and less eager than you might expect.
• Safety package: The GLE comes with a broad safety suite that includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, and semi-automated control functions. Some features are standard or optional depending on trim, so you should confirm exactly what is fitted on the vehicle you are considering.
• Infotainment: The main 12-inch touchscreen is a highlight, and the system includes Interior Assistant, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a natural voice assistant. The interface is highly featured and can be controlled by touch, touchpad, or thumbpad, so it is worth checking that you are comfortable with its complexity.
• Fuel efficiency: The GLE 450 uses 11.4 L/100 km in city driving, 9.2 L/100 km on the highway, and 10.4 L/100 km combined, while the four-cylinder GLE 350 4MATIC is rated at 12.4/9.0/10.8 L/100 km. The AMG GLE 53 Coupe is rated at 12.1 L/100 km combined for the SUV and 11.7 L/100 km combined for the Coupe version.

Which 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is offered in 8 trim levels: GLE 350 4MATIC SUV, GLE 450 4MATIC, Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+, Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+, GLE Coupe, Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe, Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ Coupe, and GLE 350 4MATIC.

Here's the short version:

• GLE 350 4MATIC SUV: This is the most sensible starting point if you want the GLE’s core strengths without paying for the most complex hardware. It uses the simpler coil-sprung setup, which the expert review points to as the most reliability-friendly choice, and it still gives you the upscale cabin and broad feature set that define the model.
• GLE 450 4MATIC: This is the best-value choice if you want a stronger engine and a more polished overall feel. It adds the turbocharged inline-six and AIRMATIC self-levelling air springs, making it the sweet spot for shoppers who want more refinement and capability without jumping to AMG pricing.
• Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+: Choose this if you want the sharper performance character and the extra hardware that comes with AMG tuning. It adds the electric supercharger, AMG driving modes, and more aggressive chassis tuning, but it is best for buyers who prioritise performance over value.
• Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC+: This is the top performance choice, with the most powerful engine and the most serious AMG hardware. It suits you if you want the most extreme version of the GLE and are comfortable paying for it.

The safety package is strong across the range, but some features are standard or optional depending on trim, so verify equipment carefully before you buy.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

The market looks moderate for selective buyers who are willing to compare listings and move quickly on well-priced examples.

• Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 214 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.41% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $52,704 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE's resale value?

The current average of $52,789 CAD sits slightly below last year's $63,915 CAD.

That softer pricing trend suggests the GLE has become more accessible for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market. If prices remain under pressure, resale values could stay sensitive to trim, condition, and equipment. Well-kept examples with desirable features should still stand out, especially when they are priced near the market average rather than above it.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE safe?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE earns the best Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives it an overall five-star safety rating with four stars for rollover resistance.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety and driver-assistance suite includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, and semi-automated control functions that can stop the car if the driver does not respond. Pre-Safe Sound is standard, and Pre-Safe Impulse Side is optional on higher trims. Some of these features vary by trim, so you should confirm the exact equipment on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 17.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 stands out for its brand-new GLE Coupe models and its unusually rich technology and comfort.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $60,451 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $52,789 CAD average.
• It focuses on a low-roofed SUV coupe shape that gives the GLE a more distinctive, style-led presence.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest value, the 2021 is the better starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to pay more for a more style-forward SUV coupe, the 2022 is the better fit.

How does the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE compare to the 2021 BMW X5?

Our experts score the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 8/10 and the 2021 BMW X5 8/10. The GLE leans harder into technology, comfort, and an especially lavish cabin, while the X5 is the more style-focused rival. The GLE also offers a broader spread of variants and stronger safety recognition, but the X5’s lower average used price makes it the more budget-friendly option for many shoppers.
