Is the 2021 BMW X5 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 BMW X5 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Technology.

Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, high-quality interior, and advanced technology, and they also value its strong resale appeal. Is the 2021 BMW X5 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with praise for the smooth ride, safety features, and high-quality interior. The X5’s powertrain lineup is broad, but the cabin and drivetrain are described as refined and trouble-free in everyday use, which supports confidence if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long term. BMW’s maintenance and repair costs can still be a consideration for used buyers, so a well-documented service history matters.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 BMW X5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The X5’s standard xLine look brings matte aluminium grilles, satin-aluminium exterior accents, roof rails, and side window surrounds, while M Sport styling adds body-colour trim, matte aluminium grille bars, and a more aggressive cabin with an M sports steering wheel, M-specific pedals, a driver’s footrest, seat piping, and model-exclusive interior trim strips. You should pay close attention to whether the features you want are standard on the trim you’re considering or bundled into options.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder with 335 horsepower, a twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 with 523 hp, a 600 hp twin-turbo V8 in the X5 M, and a plug-in hybrid with a 24-kWh battery and up to 50 km of all-electric range. All engines use an eight-speed automatic, and all models include AWD as standard equipment.
• Safety package: Every X5 includes blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but the lane-keeping system can struggle in sunshine and light rain.
• Infotainment: The standard setup centres on a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. You also get navigation, HD Radio, satellite radio, Bluetooth, five USB ports, voice recognition, a 10-speaker sound system, automatic climate control, a proximity key, a panoramic sunroof, and remote start.
• Fuel efficiency: The X5 xDrive gets 10.4 L/100 km combined, the X5 xDrive45e gets 11.5 L/100 km combined on gasoline and 4.7 Le/100 km when using electricity and gas, the X5 M50i gets 12.7 L/100 km combined, and the X5 M gets 15.7 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 BMW X5 trim should I buy?

The 2021 BMW X5 is offered in 4 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive45e, M50i, and M.

Here's the short version:

• xDrive40i: This is the entry point and the best-value choice for most shoppers because it gives you the core X5 experience with the 3.0-litre inline six, standard AWD, and the full base safety and tech suite without stepping into the pricier performance models.
• xDrive45e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive up to 50 km on electricity alone, along with the same premium cabin and equipment foundation as the rest of the range.
• M50i: This trim is for you if you want a much stronger V8-powered X5 and are willing to pay for the extra performance and higher running costs.
• M: Pick this only if you want the most extreme performance version, since it sits at the top of the range with the highest output and the least fuel-efficient setup.

BMW’s safety package is standard across the range, but the hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package has limitations in real-world use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 BMW X5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 38.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 162 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.48% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,774 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $43,817 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,237 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favourable if you’re planning to sell soon. A softer used-price environment usually means future sellers may need to be more competitive on asking price, especially if similar listings remain plentiful. The X5’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but resale value will still depend on trim, mileage, condition, and service history.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 BMW X5 safe?

The 2021 BMW X5 has been given nearly all Good ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it has a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

BMW equips every X5 with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rearview camera. The hands-on Driving Assistance Professional Package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, but testing showed the lane-keeping system can struggle in sunshine and light rain, which is a meaningful caveat for shoppers who expect frequent driver-assistance use.

Should I buy a 2021 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 14.48% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 model year adds the second-generation plug-in hybrid variant to the lineup, broadening your powertrain choices.

The bottom line: If you want the broadest mix of powertrains in this generation and you’re shopping with value in mind, the 2021 X5 is the right place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on lower-priced listings and be ready to move quickly when a well-equipped example lands near the bottom of the range.

How does the 2021 BMW X5 compare to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?

Our experts score the 2021 BMW X5 8/10 and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE 8/10.

The X5 gives you a stronger used-price advantage and a larger share of good or great deals, while the GLE has more listings and a lower starting MSRP. The BMW also brings a broader powertrain spread, including a plug-in hybrid, while the Mercedes-Benz comparison here is centred on a smaller turbocharged four-cylinder. If you want the better value in today’s used market, the X5 has the edge; if you want more inventory to choose from, the GLE is worth a look.
