CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Hyundai Palisade
overall

Summary
With 101 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,063 CAD, 30.7% of 2021 Hyundai Palisade listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Hyundai Palisade 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade stands out as a midsize, three-row SUV that combines roominess, comfort, safety, technology, and style in a package that is widely regarded as one of the strongest choices in its class. It is also described as affordable and enjoyable to drive, which helps broaden its appeal beyond buyers who simply want maximum passenger space. The overall impression is of a vehicle that aims to deliver a near-luxury experience without losing the practicality expected from a family SUV.
For 2021, the Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The lineup includes Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and the new Ultimate Calligraphy trim, with Canadian pricing ranging from $41,399 to $54,899 before the $1,925 destination charge. That combination of added equipment and a broader trim range gives shoppers more choice, while the top-end Ultimate Calligraphy version shows how far the Palisade can lean into a more upscale feel.
Owner feedback reinforces the Palisade’s strengths, especially its spacious interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, elegant design, and high-tech capabilities. At the same time, some drivers have raised concerns about the price being on the high side, minor cabin noise at high speeds, and interior materials that can feel cheap for the price point.

Reviewed a 2021 Hyundai Limited FWD on Apr 19, 2025
I purchased my 2021 Hyundai Palisade during the summer of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of vehicles, it’s the first vehicle that I NEVER test drove before I purchased it. Fortunately, my youngest brother had one that was similar and he had given me raving reviews about it. So, I wasn’t too concerned about its handling or drivability. During my ownership of the Palisade, it drove and handled superbly well in all road conditions. It didn’t matter what the road conditions were, the Palisade was always well grounded and with good tires, not even heavily wet roads were able to throw it off course. I would travel once or twice a year to Colorado Springs, Co., to visit my daughter and her family and the trips were always smooth and comfortable. Driving the Palisade was an absolute pleasure to do. Now, for the reasons why I traded in the Palisade and purchased a 2025 Ram 1500 instead. The Limited model comes with a sunroof and little did I know but Hyundai uses plastic for the sunroof rail system that allows the sunroof to slide back and forth. Well, I wasn’t a big user of the sunroof and that apparently was my mistake. You see, this last fall, October, 2024, I believe, my sunroof rail system broke. Yes, it flat broke because as I was told, I didn’t use it enough. It was explained to me that since the parts are plastic and that there’s grease along the rail system, I needed to use the sunroof more frequently in order to keep those parts well lubricated by using the sunroof regularly. Since, I didn’t use the sunroof regularly, I may have used it 12 times in my 4 years of owning it, that’s what lead to the rail system being locked up and causing it to break. It makes sense but WOW is that crazy. I was also told that the repair would cost me over $7K!!! That wasn’t going to happen, so with my girlfriend’s help, we taped and sealed the sunroof using some gorilla tape and there were no leaks. It was during this same time that the sunroof broke, I was informed by the Hyundai dealer, following an oil change, that another PLASTIC part had broken. This time it was the PLASTIC oil filter housing unit. Apparently, it had possibly been broken when someone changed the oil filter during an oil change. I can’t prove that but it’s the most logical explanation. Since the sunroof wasn’t leaking and after I found a local mechanic shop to replace the oil filter housing unit, the Hyundai dealer wanted way too much money for the repair, I was content to go on and keep my Hyundai Palisade, which had 108K miles on it, and run off into the sunset with it. Well, not so quick, because I began to notice that there was a possible problem that was developing with the transmission. I never took to a mechanic or service center to be looked at but I believe that the transmission was beginning to slip. There were rare occasions, one or twice a week, where the transmission seemed to make a different sound around 20-30 mph. It wasn’t every day but I did notice it. Well, that was the last straw. There may not have been anything wrong with the transmission at all but I wasn’t going to keep it and find out. Therefore, I decided to trade it in and I purchased the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. My time with the Palisade was great and I enjoyed driving it but the reliability and quality of the vehicle was deeply impacted by plastic parts in the wrong locations. Those plastic parts and reliability issues are the direct reasons why I traded in the Palisade once I noticed the possible transmission issue. It was almost like the vehicle was built to last 100K miles, due to its own powertrain warranty and once that was done, so was the vehicle. It’s only due to the fun and pleasure of owning and driving the Palisade for the first problem free 100K miles that I’m even giving the vehicle 3 out of 5 stars. When I purchased the Palisade, I truly thought I had gotten a well equipped vehicle for a bargain. Unfortunately, in the long run, despite the Palisade being well equipped, it wasn’t reliable for the long term and thus, I probably won’t buy another Hyundai ever again. Now, Hyundai and Chevy are the two manufacturers that I will have to avoid. My 1991 Chevy 1500 had to have its transmission rebuilt at only 109K miles nearly 20 years ago and I haven’t purchased a Chevy or GMC vehicle since then. I like dependable and reliable vehicles that last without major repairs being needed around 100K miles. That’s not asking a lot and I don’t see why manufacturers don’t build vehicles that last at least until 150K miles before major repairs are needed, when owners are keeping up with routine maintenance, like myself.

The best features you can get for the year. Best value for $$ other than a Kia Sorrento sx imo. Just be careful of the warranty expiring at a critical time between 160000km and 180000km as these are the times where a lot could break down all at once.

Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns a 4.64/5 user rating and a 9/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
You get a strong mix of spaciousness, abundant features, and a comfortable ride, along with an elegant design and high-tech capabilities. It is also framed as a practical three-row SUV that aims for a near-luxury feel without giving up family-friendly usefulness.
With 29.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful value in the market if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to the Palisade’s spacious interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, and high-tech capabilities, while also describing it as a vehicle many buyers would compare favourably to more expensive luxury SUVs. The expert review also presents it as financially smart to purchase and a vehicle you can count on for family use.
Hyundai’s five-year, 100,000 km warranty coverage adds peace of mind for used buyers, though long-term ownership still depends on how well the vehicle was maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Ultimate Calligraphy stands out with a different grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, additional lower body trim, unique 20-inch alloy wheels, upgraded interior detailing, and a simulated suede headliner. It also looks and feels more upscale than the other versions, while the cabin’s quilted and stitched premium Nappa leather helps it feel especially premium.
- Powertrain: Every Palisade uses a 3.8-litre V6 with 291 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission, and Canadian models come with standard all-wheel drive. It is tuned to be quiet, predictable, and easy to drive, with enough power for everyday use and towing.
- Safety package: Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, and a rear occupant alert system. Most trims add active blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, while Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy add a Blind View Monitor. Highway Driving Assist is a standout feature, but it is not hands-free.
- Infotainment: Two touchscreen sizes are offered: 8 inches and 10.25 inches. Both can pair two smartphones to Bluetooth at once, but only the 8-inch system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The larger screen still needs a wired connection for mirroring.
- Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada predicts 11.1 L/100 km in combined driving, and the test vehicle matched that figure.
Which 2021 Hyundai Palisade trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is offered in 4 trim levels: Essential, Preferred, Luxury, and Ultimate Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- Essential: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the Palisade’s core space, safety, and standard V6 power at the lowest price.
- Preferred: This is likely the best-value choice if you want a stronger mix of equipment and everyday comfort without moving too far up the price ladder.
- Luxury: This trim is the better pick if you want more upscale features and the added Blind View Monitor.
- Ultimate Calligraphy: Choose this if you want the most luxurious presentation, the richest cabin materials, and the most premium-feeling Palisade experience.
Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy trim levels equip the Palisade with a Blind View Monitor.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 270 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 20.70% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $27,291 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade's resale value?
The current average of $27,291 CAD sits slightly below last year's $34,413 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer now, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. A vehicle that has already moved down this much can be harder to price aggressively unless it is especially clean, well equipped, and well documented.
Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand later, especially for a family SUV with a reputation for comfort, space, and features. That kind of appeal can make the Palisade easier to move when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade safe?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade earns top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, multiple lane-keeping systems, and a rear occupant alert system. Most trims also get active blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning, plus Safe Exit Assist. Luxury and Ultimate Calligraphy add a Blind View Monitor, and Highway Driving Assist is a standout feature for smooth lane-centring support.
One important caveat is that Highway Driving Assist is not designed for hands-free driving, so you still need to keep your hands on the wheel.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Palisade or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 29.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 20.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $32,672 CAD, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $27,291 CAD average.
- It adds direct gasoline injection.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the better pick if you want the strongest value and a broader spread of trims at a lower average price. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
