How much does the 2020 Toyota Tacoma cost?

There are 175 listings available, which suggests you have some room to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.32/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

Drivers repeatedly praise its reliability, practicality, and strong off-road capability. The Tacoma’s straightforward design and useful everyday utility also come through as recurring strengths.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin materials feel cheap, and the base engine is underwhelming. Toyota’s own notes also frame it as a truck that prioritises toughness and utility over refinement, which fits buyers who want capability more than polish.

With its midsize-truck format and rugged personality, it suits you best if you want a straightforward pickup that leans into durability and trail confidence. 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which is a decent sign of market flexibility.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.32/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback points to reliability, durability, and a truck that owners feel good about keeping for the long haul. That kind of praise matters if you want a used pickup you can count on over time.

Toyota’s test-drive notes also describe the Tacoma as dependable in the way it delivers capability and off-road confidence. The truck’s straightforward mechanical setup and reputation for toughness reinforce that impression.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright fragility and more about living with a truck that can feel rough, noisy, and less refined than rivals.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trims range from more basic, utility-focused versions to the TRD Pro, which adds 16-inch black TRD wheels, all-terrain tyres, exposed red Fox Racing shocks, an aluminium skid plate, and a chunkier grille. The base setup is simpler, while higher trims bring more off-road hardware and visual distinction.
• Powertrain: In Canada, the 3.5-litre V6 is standard, with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic is standard, while a six-speed manual is optional on TRD Sport, Off-Road, and Pro models. The manual skips Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is optional.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch system with navigation is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless charging is available.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 4 trim levels: SR, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness and standard V6 power without paying for extra off-road hardware. It makes sense if you value the truck’s basics more than added trail equipment.
• TRD Sport: This is the best-value choice if you want a stronger mix of everyday usability and added equipment without jumping to the most specialised trims. It also gets the optional manual transmission.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to target if you want the Tacoma’s off-road character to be the main reason you buy it. CarGurus recommends this model with the long bed.
• TRD Pro: This is the most trail-focused version, with the most aggressive hardware and the strongest visual identity. It suits you if off-road capability matters more than price or refinement.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring remains optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 175 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $40,072 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $40,170 CAD sits slightly below last year's $42,565 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests the market has adjusted downward from where it was a year ago. If you plan to sell later, you should expect resale value to depend heavily on trim, condition, and how well the truck has been maintained.

The Tacoma still benefits from strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for durability, which helps support demand. Higher-spec versions with desirable equipment and off-road appeal may hold interest better than more basic examples.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.32/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating and a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for both front passengers in frontal tests and for the front seats in side barrier and pole tests, plus five-star ratings for rear passengers.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring is optional.

The main caveat is the lower Acceptable result for the front passenger in the small overlap test, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.

Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.32/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds useful design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s rugged, capability-first character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $42,872 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $40,170 CAD average.
• It adds Nightshade and Trail special editions plus standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and standard safety tech. If you’re willing to pay more for a slightly fresher setup and a few extra updates, the 2021 is the better alternative.
