Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a midsize pickup that leans hard into capability and off-road confidence rather than trying to feel polished or modern in the usual way. Toyota’s changes for 2020 are described as minor, but they are meant to bring the truck a little further into modern times with design and technology updates. Even so, the Tacoma’s appeal still comes from the same core strengths that keep buyers coming back: its size, its dependable off-road features, and its reputation as a top-selling midsize truck in North America.
Inside, the Tacoma’s technology is one of its clearer strengths because it is easy to use, and it also comes with standard advanced safety features. At the same time, the truck is not trying to hide its rough edges. The interior materials feel cheap, and the base engine is described as underwhelming, so buyers looking for refinement or strong everyday punch may find it less convincing. Still, for shoppers who value practicality, reliability, and a truck that is built with off-road use in mind, the 2020 Toyota Tacoma has a distinctive character that remains easy to understand.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD off road model is the best in its class. It’s a little more expensive than other models in its class but it’s definitely worth it. The performance, looks, interior features and so on are just incomparable. I’ve owned this truck for 10 days and have had multiple offers for it already. It was parked beside a new Chevrolet Colorado and new Ford Ranger last weekend and I hate to tell the owners but it made them look really bad. Toyota Rules in all aspects. It’s not just my opinion it’s been the worlds opinion for years.

Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.32/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, performance, and design, and many also value its practicality and strong off-road capabilities. The Tacoma’s straightforward layout and easy-to-use technology fit its purpose well, especially if you want a midsize pickup that prioritises capability over polish.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials feel cheap, and the base engine is underwhelming. In other words, if you want refinement or strong everyday punch, you may find it less convincing than some rivals.
With its focus on practicality, reliability, and off-road use, it suits you best if you want a truck with a distinct, work-ready character. 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you a decent chance of finding value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.32/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as reliable and appreciate its dependable, trouble-free character, along with its strong long-term appeal. The expert assessment also points to a truck that is built to last, with fit and finish that is better than some rivals and materials that should hold up over time.
Toyota also includes a standard suite of driver assists, which adds confidence for everyday use. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about accepting a truck that can feel rough and expensive for what it offers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Tacoma’s trims vary mainly by equipment and off-road focus, with the base SR keeping things simple while higher trims add more capability and visual upgrades. The Limited trim gets 18-inch alloy wheels, while TRD Pro models add LED headlights with TRD and PRO lighting, sequential turn signals, a chunkier grille, an aluminium skid plate, exposed Fox Racing shocks, 16-inch black TRD wheels, and all-terrain tyres.
- Powertrain: In Canada, the 3.5-litre V6 is standard on all trims, with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic and 4WD with an electronic low-range transfer case are standard, while a six-speed manual is optional on TRD Sport, Off-Road, and Pro.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring is optional, so you should check whether a used example has it.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch system with navigation is available. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and wireless charging is available.
- Fuel efficiency: Fuel efficiency is listed at 13.0 L/100 km in the city, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 L/100 km combined for the V6.
Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 3 trim levels: SR, TRD Sport, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core capability without paying for extra equipment. It makes sense if you care more about the truck’s standard V6, 4WD hardware, and straightforward usability than about luxury or appearance upgrades.
- TRD Sport: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds more appeal without jumping all the way to the most expensive off-road model. It suits you if you want a more equipped Tacoma and still want to keep pricing several grand lower than the top end.
- TRD Pro: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused Tacoma. It adds the most aggressive hardware and styling, but it is the priciest route and best suited to buyers who will actually use that capability.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, so you get the core safety package even if you stay with a lower trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on strong examples.
- Deal availability: 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 190 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $40,269 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $40,351 CAD sits slightly below last year's $42,750 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Tacoma is no longer climbing the way it was, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current market shows that buyers are still willing to pay for Tacoma nameplate appeal, but they are also more price-sensitive than they were a year ago. Well-kept examples with the right trim and equipment should still draw attention, especially if they are priced near the market average.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.32/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and side barrier and pole tests, and five-star ratings for rear passengers in NHTSA testing. It is also an IIHS Top Safety Pick, with Good ratings in five of six crash tests and an Acceptable result for the front passenger in the small overlap test.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring is optional, so you should confirm whether a used truck has that extra coverage. The main caveat is the lower Acceptable small-overlap result, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.32/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 brings minor design and technology updates while keeping the Tacoma’s dependable off-road focus.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $43,192 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $40,351 CAD average.
- It adds two special editions and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it delivers the Tacoma formula at a lower average price and with strong owner satisfaction. If you are willing to pay more for a slightly updated 2021, that makes sense mainly if the added special editions or standard climate control matter to you.
