How much does the 2022 Toyota Tacoma cost?

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — 4.36/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma is a strong fit if you want a smaller pickup that can handle commuting and weekend adventures. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability, and they also like its resale value and overall durability. The trade-offs are familiar: some drivers want more advanced technology, and others note underpowered engines and cramped seating. That lines up with the truck’s use case as a practical, tough option for camping, kayaking, mountain biking, and weekend projects rather than a refinement-first pickup. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Drivers describe the Tacoma as reliable, durable, and a truck they can count on over the long term. The expert assessment also points to a supremely trusty and durable vehicle that is built for hard use, which reinforces that reputation. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly ownership experience is part of the appeal, and the truck’s reputation for durability should help reduce long-term ownership risk for used buyers.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma’s trim ladder starts with a work-focused setup that includes 16-inch steel wheels, a manually sliding rear window, air conditioning, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a trio of USB ports, a 4.2-inch colour display, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add features such as alloy wheels, heated front seats, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, leather seating, blind spot monitoring, a power-sliding rear window, and TRD-specific styling and hardware.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get the 3.5-litre V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, plus either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission and standard 4WD. It is capable, but it can feel slow to build speed on the highway, and the gearing can work against smooth acceleration.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional, so check whether the truck you are considering has them.
• Infotainment: The base system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other packages add an 8-inch touchscreen and SiriusXM satellite radio. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and the interface is generally simple and easy to use.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 with 4WD and a manual transmission returns 13.8 L/100 km in city driving, 11.4 on the highway, and 12.7 combined. With the automatic, it uses 13.0 L/100 km city, 10.5 highway, and 11.8 combined. In mixed driving, the observed average was 14.1 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: standard/Trail, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• standard/Trail: This is the most basic way into the Tacoma, and it gives you the core truck hardware plus the standard safety and infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s capability and don’t need many comfort upgrades.
• SR5: This adds 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated front seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want a more usable daily driver without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped shift-knob, wireless device charging, and a power-sliding rear window. It suits you if you want a more polished and better-equipped Tacoma for everyday use.
• TRD Sport Premium: This version builds on the TRD Sport with more upscale equipment, including leather seating, blind spot monitoring, a wireless charger, and a power sliding and tilting moonroof. It is the pick if comfort and convenience matter more than keeping costs down.
• TRD Off-road: This trim swaps in 16-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires, a trail-oriented suspension with Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and Multi-Terrain Select. It is the right choice if you want the Tacoma’s off-road focus without going all the way to the top.
• TRD Pro: This is the most rugged version, with unique exterior styling and badging, underbody skid plates, upgraded LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select, and a multi-terrain monitor. It is the one to buy if off-road capability is your priority.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the range, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

The market looks moderately favourable if you are a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 341 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.24% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,532 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $43,633 CAD sits slightly below last year's $46,047 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The Tacoma still benefits from strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for durability, which should help support demand over time. Even so, resale value will depend on condition, mileage, trim, and whether the truck has the equipment shoppers want most.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2022 Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional, so you should check whether a used example has those features. The backup camera is standard, but the image is very grainy, so backing up still calls for extra care.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Tacoma’s strong off-road ability, easy-to-use tech, and standard V6/4WD setup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $42,872 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $43,633 CAD average.
• It adds two special editions and standard dual-zone automatic climate control.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $48,138 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $43,633 CAD average.
• It leans harder into the Tacoma’s rugged reputation and off-road appeal.

The bottom line: The 2022 Tacoma makes the most sense if you want the current-year balance of capability, safety, and market pricing. If you are price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling alternative, the 2023 is the step up to compare.
