CarGurus Analysis: 2018 Mazda CX-9
Summary
With 81 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,240 CAD, 32.1% of 2018 Mazda CX-9 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2018 Mazda CX-9 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2018 Mazda CX-9 stands out as a three-row SUV that puts driving enjoyment ahead of the usual family-hauler formula. Mazda describes it as a sportier choice than many rivals, and that character is reinforced by standard all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, Mazda Intelligent Drive Select with Sport and Off-Road modes, and Kinematic Posture Control. It also offers a premium feel that many buyers will notice right away, especially if they value stylish design and a more upscale cabin over maximum interior and cargo space.
For 2018, the CX-9 was available in multiple trims, starting with the GS, which came with eight-passenger seating, cloth seats, a 10.25-inch centre display, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch instrument display, and an eight-speaker sound system. Standard safety equipment was strong as well, with features such as automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. Higher trims added more comfort and convenience, including available seven-passenger seating with captain’s chairs, leatherette or leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, a power liftgate, a Bose audio system, wireless phone charging, a surround-view camera, and, on the top trim, a 12.3-inch centre display with touchscreen functionality for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
There are trade-offs, though. The CX-9’s ride borders on stiff, its technology can feel unintuitive, and it is smaller inside than class leaders. Even so, it remains appealing for shoppers who want a family SUV with a more polished interior, a distinctive driving feel, and a good balance of practicality and style.

We recently purchased a 2018 Mazda CX9 GT after months of car shopping. This car does not disappoint. It’s a great value for the money. The interior is on par with premium brands, the build quality is very good. The ride is smooth and responsive, even though it has is a four cylinder, it’s very quick for its size. It’s good on gas and has adequate seating for a family. It’s truly a great car.

How much does the 2018 Mazda CX-9 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $19,285 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $18,771 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $21,899 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,899 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.93% |
Prices have softened 11.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 82 listings available, which suggests a reasonable amount of inventory for shoppers comparing options.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-9 a good car?
Yes — the 2018 Mazda CX-9 earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its blend of comfort, luxury, and practicality, along with its spacious interior and fun performance. That makes it a strong fit if you want a three-row SUV with a more premium feel and a more engaging drive than many family-focused rivals. With 30.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2018 Mazda CX-9 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable and trouble-free for many shoppers, with long-term ownership appeal supported by strong satisfaction. Some drivers note concerns around storage space and certain driver-assistance features feeling overworked, but the overall tone is positive. For used buyers, that means the bigger risk is choosing a poorly maintained example rather than worrying about a broad reliability pattern.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2018 Mazda CX-9?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can afford to compare listings carefully before moving quickly.
- Deal availability: 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 82 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,771 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2018 Mazda CX-9's resale value?
The current average of $19,285 CAD sits slightly below last year's $21,899 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favourable point. If you plan to sell later, the softer current pricing means your future resale will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Well-kept examples should still attract interest because the CX-9 has a strong reputation with owners and a distinctive premium feel.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2018 Mazda CX-9 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2018 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2018 if:
- 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2018 Mazda CX-9 is a smart pick if you want a three-row SUV with a premium cabin, strong owner approval, and a more engaging driving feel. If you are price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the best-maintained, best-priced example rather than chasing a specific year alone.
