Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-9 stands out for putting driving enjoyment ahead of the usual family-SUV formula. Mazda describes it as a sportier choice than many rivals, and that character is reinforced by standard all-wheel drive, an eight-speed automatic transmission, Mazda Intelligent Drive Select with Sport and Off-Road modes, and Kinematic Posture Control. The result is a three-row SUV that aims to feel more polished and engaging on the road than its size might suggest.
It also appeals with a premium-leaning cabin and a strong equipment list for the base model. Standard features include cloth seats, a 10.25-inch full-colour centre display with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch LCD instrument panel display, an eight-speaker sound system, three-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and keyless entry with push-button start. Safety equipment is similarly broad, with smart city brake support, blind spot monitoring, radar cruise control with stop & go, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, driver attention alert, and rear cross-traffic alert.
The CX-9’s main trade-off is that it prioritises style and driving feel over maximum space. Mazda says buyers who value a sporty driving feel, a premium interior, and a stylish design over maximum interior and cargo space will find a lot to like, and the infotainment system can be fiddly because it only works as a touchscreen when used with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Even so, for shoppers who want a three-row SUV with a more upscale and engaging personality, the 2017 Mazda CX-9 has a clear identity.

This was our Goldilocks car. Not too big. Not too small. Has all the features we needed and cared about. The third row option is super helpful given we don’t need it all the time, but it’s great to have for trips or when we load up all the kids and dogs and all our belongings to go visit family. It’s ZIPPY. Great acceleration and a firm but not harsh drive. Very responsive and honestly I’m a little obsessed. The safety ratings really sold me. That was the most important thing to me and after watching a lot of crash test footage I was sold. I honestly don’t feel like my car is missing anything. I didn’t care to have lane assist or anything like that so the touring was great for us with blind spot detection and back up camera. LOVE THE SEAT WARMERS. I’m practically a lizard. Give me the heat. Lol I feel like it compares well to the Highlander. About the same situation in the third row (although I felt like I had slightly more room in the cx-9) and a better trunk situation with the hidden compartment and cubbies in the side. Overall, I love it. A whole lot. As a mom of three with kids out of anchored car seats and one full back booster and one seat only booster and a huge 8 year old….it’s perfect. (My neighbor has the same car with two littles in car seats and she absolutely loves her cx-9 as well.) great family option while still feeling fun.

Everything I’m looking for! The European sleek design inside and out, without the hefty price tag that normally comes with a luxury vehicle.
