CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 42 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,951 CAD, 38.1% of 2017 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Outback 4.65 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Outback stands out as a practical, roomy wagon-turned-crossover with a strong reputation for all-weather capability. By this generation, Subaru had moved the Outback further away from the Legacy, and the model’s appeal rested on its generous space, standard all-wheel drive, and a comfortable, refined ride. It also remained one of Subaru’s key vehicles for showcasing technology, which helped give it a broad mix of safety and convenience features that many buyers value in a used vehicle.
For 2017, the Outback offered a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, while higher trims could be had with a 3.6-litre six-cylinder engine. AWD was standard, and the CVT with a six-speed manual shift mode was part of the package. The cabin also benefited from an updated interior and new infotainment screens, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto appearing for the first time on the optional 8-inch setup. That makes this model year appealing to shoppers who want a versatile family vehicle with modern connectivity and a well-equipped feel.
There are trade-offs, though. The CVT can be droning and may feel listless on the highway, and the Outback’s fuel economy is not class-leading. Some owners also find the 2.5-litre engine underpowered, and the infotainment system is not universally loved. Even so, the 2017 Outback remains attractive because it combines safety, capability, and everyday usefulness in a package that has earned strong owner loyalty.

I love this car. The exterior is beautiful, and the interior looks $10k above its class. I’m changing all of the interior lights to led because the yellow incandescent glow looks out of place. Some of the included features, like lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, seem unnecessary, but probably welcome inclusions for someone with less than stellar driving. Overall, 8/10. I will definitely be keeping it until repairs become too expensive.

Good solid car to replace Hyundai Santa Fe that was totaled from Hurricane Helene. The 4 cylinder is peppy and for the first tank, getting great gas mileage. It will be easier on the wallet and goes farther on an 18 gallon tank than the Santa Fe.

I believe that the car has many nice features to enjoy, but will have to learn and acquire the knowledge as how to use these features as time permits. I want to be better and more comfortable knowing where everything is after driving Hondas for more than 30 years, this is my 1st Subaru

Excellent car,it has the 3.6 in it,It tows my trailers effortlessly. Its incredible in the snow.We have had an Impreza, and 2 Foresters, all have been excellent, but the Outback is by far our favorite. Other than oil changes tires and brakes repairs have been limited to wheel bearing on the Impreza, after 16 years of owning it.One of the best cars around in my opinion, and Ive been a mechanic since 1976

| Change vs. Last Year | −16.48% |
Prices have softened 16.48% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 173 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice if you're comparing condition, mileage, and equipment.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Subaru Outback earns a 4.65/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the safety features, spacious interior, and reliability, and they also value the comfortable ride and AWD capability for a wide range of driving conditions. For you, that makes it a practical pick if you want a roomy, all-weather family vehicle with useful technology and everyday versatility. With 27.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights reliability, dependability, and a vehicle that many drivers feel comfortable counting on over time. That matters if you want a used vehicle that has already built a reputation for steady day-to-day use rather than one that relies on novelty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing a well-maintained example that has been cared for consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 173 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.48% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,095 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $14,095 CAD sits slightly below last year's $16,877 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has become more buyer-friendly, which can make it harder for a future seller to command a premium unless the vehicle is especially clean, well equipped, or lightly used. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside risk later because the model has already adjusted downward. Strong condition and desirable equipment should matter more when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 Outback makes the most sense if you want a well-liked, practical used wagon-crossover with strong owner approval and a market that has eased enough to create some buying opportunities. If your priority is value, this year is worth a close look; if you're especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years and focus on whichever one gives you the best combination of condition, equipment, and asking price.
