CarGurus Analysis: 2015 Subaru Outback

Summary
With 18 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,606 CAD, 22.2% of 2015 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Subaru Outback 4.86 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Subaru Outback stands out because it sits at the point where Subaru officially treated the model as a crossover rather than a wagon, while still keeping the practical, all-wheel-drive character that made the name popular. It debuted with a more evolutionary look that was a little sportier and more aerodynamic than before, and it also brought more previously optional safety systems into wider use. For buyers, that combination of familiar utility, standard AWD, and a more modern shape is a big part of the appeal.
Mechanically, the 2015 Outback was offered with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine rated at 175 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque, which is the engine most used examples have. A 3.6-litre six-cylinder was available in 3.6R Touring and Limited packages, making 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, but it was less popular because of its 10.5 L/100 km combined fuel consumption and higher price. AWD remained standard, as did a continuously variable transmission with a six-speed manual shift mode, and Subaru added X-Mode terrain control, hill-descent control, and hill-start assist to help in slippery conditions.
Inside, the 2015 Outback was more about useful upgrades than flashy luxury. It used a 6.2-inch screen on the base model and a 7-inch unit on higher trims, while the EyeSight suite was limited to upper trims and included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The main drawbacks are familiar Subaru ones: the CVT can feel droning, fuel economy is not class-leading, and long-term maintenance can be costlier than some rivals. Even so, it remains a roomy, comfortable, and capable used choice with a strong reputation for safety and all-weather confidence.

My mother recently purchased a brand new Outback in 2023 and from the drives I’ve taken in it, all of the safety features and the body style, center of gravity and comfort led me to look for used Outbacks for my next purchase. I was not disappointed in the 2015 and I will have a hard time wanting to sit in any other car without a 6-cylinder engine. The Limited trim is perfectly comfortable: the same EyeSight features and safety focuses accomplish the same as a brand new year model but with a touch of “retro” flair in the (arguably dated but, I don’t mind) screen, the accent lighting in the cab and less is more approach of the interiors.

The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the absolute best iteration of the Outback. Test driven model years 2013, 2015 & 2019 and the Outback just gets better and better. If you can find a 3.6R Limited trim level, be quick to snatch it up before I do -- LOL! I truly believe this wagon is worth every penny.

How much does the 2015 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,672 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $10,672 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $13,502 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $13,228 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −19.33% |
Prices have softened 19.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 91 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 4.86/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers consistently praise its solid ride, luxurious feel, impressive safety features, ample cargo space, and fuel efficiency, especially with the all-wheel drive system. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a practical, roomy vehicle with all-weather capability and a familiar, useful driving experience. With 24.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop carefully.
Is the 2015 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with drivers highlighting the vehicle’s solid feel and confidence-inspiring all-wheel drive. That kind of long-term praise matters if you want a used vehicle you can count on for daily use and changing weather. For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the basic formula and more about making sure the specific example has been maintained properly over time.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2015 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 91 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.33% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $10,672 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2015 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $10,672 CAD sits slightly below last year's $13,228 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the vehicle easier to buy now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you purchase at the right price, you reduce the risk of taking a bigger depreciation hit later. The current spread between the low and high end also shows there is still room for condition, trim, and equipment to influence future resale.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2015 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2015 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2015 if:
- 24.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 19.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2015 is a strong choice if you want the Outback’s standard all-wheel drive, roomy cabin, and practical all-weather character at a softer price point than some nearby years. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare it with the 2014 for lower entry pricing or the 2016 for a slightly newer take on the same formula.
