CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Subaru Forester
Summary
With 225 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,866 CAD, 29.8% of 2017 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Subaru Forester 4.7 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact SUV that blends everyday usability with Subaru’s hallmark all-wheel-drive confidence. It sits within the fourth generation, which brought major improvements in efficiency, safety, and technology, along with a larger platform, a taller passenger compartment for better outward visibility, and a more aerodynamic shape. For buyers, that means a Forester that feels roomy and sensible without losing the rugged character that has long defined the nameplate.
For 2017 specifically, the Forester gained a mid-cycle refresh with revised styling, including a new front bumper and grille with redesigned headlights, plus new interior options. The EyeSight system was updated with new colour cameras for a wider, longer field of vision, and extra soundproofing and thicker glass were added to reduce road noise. It was also available with two powertrains: a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder with 170 hp and 174 lb-ft, and a turbocharged 2.0-litre Forester XT with 250 hp and 258 lb-ft. Symmetrical all-wheel drive was standard across the range, and higher-spec models got X-Mode control with hill descent control.
That combination makes the 2017 Forester appealing to shoppers who value traction, visibility, and a useful cabin over flash. It was well received for its interior space and EyeSight technology, though it was also criticised for being less engaging to drive than some rivals. Buyers should also be aware that the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre engine in early fourth-generation models was affected by oil consumption issues, and the CVT, while generally reliable, requires regular maintenance to ensure longevity.

I fell in love with this car at first sight. I drove and considered a 2025 Forester to compare and could not move to 2025. The 2017 Forester is friendly, bright, wide visibility, you sit high in it, it has a smooth ride and has all the basics that you need. My particular pre-owned model had a quality I cannot describe that is probably due to the previous owner but it is a perfect car. I would not hesitate to buy at 2017 Forester, unless it is truly toward the end of its life.

It’s my first subaru and I’m already in love with the whole brand! The adaptive cruise control is one amazing feature, the cabin feels cavernous, and I feel glued to the road.

If you live in an area where 4 wheel drive is a winter necessity the Subaru Forester fills that need with comfort and stability. The all wheel drive (AWD) that never shuts off gives more sure footed traction Winter and Summer. It doesnt matter if you buy the basic model or the luxury model the AWD and stability control are standard features.

Excellent value for the money, the moon roof extends back to the third row and is my favorite feature. Very kid friendly, and exceptionally comfortable. Packed with all the creature comforts one could want in a vehicle.

How much does the 2017 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $14,855 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $14,855 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $18,137 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,103 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −17.94% |
Prices have softened 17.94% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 227 listings available, which suggests a decent amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2017 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 4.7/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, exceptional safety features, and reliable all-wheel-drive capabilities, while also noting the comfort and value it delivers. For you, that makes it a sensible compact SUV if you want everyday usability, strong visibility, and all-weather confidence. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile options to shop.
Is the 2017 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback highlights its reliable all-wheel-drive capabilities and dependable day-to-day use, which supports confidence if you want a vehicle you can count on. That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and inspection results, since long-term ownership risk is best managed by confirming the vehicle has been cared for properly.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 227 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.94% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $14,855 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $14,855 CAD sits slightly below last year's $18,103 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Forester more attractive to buyers today but may limit upside for a future seller if prices stay soft. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a lower entry point, which can help cushion depreciation. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want a well-liked Forester with solid owner satisfaction and a softer price than it had a year ago. If you’re price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby model years to see whether a similar Forester can be found at an even lower entry point.
