CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
Summary
With 35 currently listed for sale near Vancouver, BC and an average price of $13,019 CAD, 34.3% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a well-rounded midsize SUV that had already grown up considerably by this point in its life cycle. It offered a more refined cabin than earlier versions, with improved materials and more passenger space, while the third row was more accommodating than before, though still best left to kids. Kia also added useful safety and convenience equipment over time, including standard rear parking sensors and available forward collision and lane-departure warnings, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. Heated front seats were standard in Canada, which was an unusual offering at the time.
For buyers who wanted flexibility, the 2017 Sorento’s powertrain range was a major part of its appeal. The base 2.4-litre four-cylinder made 185 hp, while a 240 hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder was available, and the 290 hp 3.3-litre V6 returned for three-row models. Fuel economy varied by engine, with the base four-cylinder estimated at between 9.6 and 10.5 L/100 km combined, the turbo at between 10.3 and 11.0 L/100 km combined, and the V6 at between 11.1 and 12.2 L/100 km combined. That said, the base engine was described as too weak for the larger Sorento, so shoppers looking for stronger performance would likely find the V6 or turbocharged engine more satisfying.
What makes this Sorento especially distinctive is how much it balanced family practicality with a more polished feel than its predecessors. It was larger, better equipped, and safer than earlier generations, yet it remained a relatively affordable used SUV. The main drawbacks were that the third row was not especially spacious and the base engine could feel underpowered, but for buyers who value comfort, features, and available V6 power, the 2017 Kia Sorento has a lot going for it.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

If you find a listing below $12,497 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $12,497 CAD sits slightly below last year's $15,054 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the Sorento more attractive to you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it also means there may be less upside if prices stay near the current level. Even so, a well-kept example with the right equipment and a strong service history should still appeal to shoppers looking for a practical midsize SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 22.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.99% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 Sorento is a smart pick if you want a more polished midsize SUV with strong owner approval, useful features, and a price that has come down meaningfully. If you are especially price-sensitive, it is also worth comparing nearby model years to see whether a similar Sorento offers a better deal or a better-equipped trim for the money.
