CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Kia Soul
Summary
With 120 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,038 CAD, 25.8% of 2016 Kia Soul listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2016 Kia Soul 4.65 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2016 Kia Soul stands out because it blends quirky styling with everyday usefulness. Kia’s buying guide describes the Soul as a subcompact hatchback with a boxy, distinctive shape, and it also notes that the model helped shift Kia’s image toward something more appealing while still value-conscious. For shoppers, that combination of personality and practicality is a big part of the appeal: it is meant to be affordable, easy to live with, and different from the usual small-car crowd.
For 2016, the Soul sits in the second-generation family, which kept the original formula but made it look neater and more SUV-like. The guide says this generation had a slightly longer, wider, and stiffer chassis, along with a quieter cabin, suspension upgrades, and a tailgate that opened six centimetres higher for easier cargo access. It also lists 532 litres of cargo space, plus a more upscale interior feel thanks to extra soft-touch materials and circular design details. In Canada, the 2016 model’s engine line-up included a 1.6-litre inline four-cylinder with 130 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque, while upper trims used a 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder with direct injection making 164 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.
The 2016 Soul also offered a solid spread of standard and available equipment for the class. Base models came with features such as power windows and locks, heated mirrors, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker stereo, while higher trims added items like heated front seats, roof rails, a rear-view camera, leather upholstery, and keyless entry with push-button start. That said, the guide is clear that the Soul’s powertrain was only “okay” to drive, and the user feedback echoes a few practical trade-offs: owners praise the spacious cabin, good fuel economy, comfort, and affordability, but some wish cargo space were larger and note that certain conveniences can be hard to find.

I love everything about it except that it doesn’t have the same safety features other cars have like blind spot detection and a backup camera.

Reviewed a 2016 Kia Soul on Apr 29, 2022
This model year is perfect for me, as I really wanted to retain the hatchback quality, while getting a slightly larger interior than my old Toyota Matrix. It feels so much larger inside, much more rommy for a tiny female, but even my brother, who is very broad shouldered feels comfortable. This 2016model DOES NOT have a screen, which I like (the 2017s do). The two front seats are comfortable and there are4 cup holders in the front of the car, which are a PAIN when there are not enough. The radio, cruise control, hands free talking on my phone are all on the steering wheel, two 12v, aux and USB plugins in the dash/radio area plus the Bluetooth capability make more opportunities for hands free answering/listening. The boot is not large and a tray can be lifted out to access the factory tire repair kit and there is NO SPARE. The interior is two toned cloth on this model, but I wouldnt have it any other way! I think this car is a good value in comparison to say a Hyundai sonata. The size is very similar, but its just short and has a little bit more interior personality. I also looked at a Kia Sorento, and I did not like it nearly as much as I like the Soul. The only thing that I would want in a car going forward, is, some sort of screen that pulls away from the back two seats towards the opening of the hatchback, just to cover up what things you have in the trunk however it was pointed out to me and Im learning to be okay with the fact that the back windows are tinted so dark that it is nearly impossible to see the contents of what you have in the boot of the car. Overall, Im really excited about owning this car! Its really a fairly compact car fits in small car spaces, its very roomy on the inside and has enough power to do the job I need it to do. Drive around town and occasionally take me out of town.

How much does the 2016 Kia Soul cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $9,076 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $8,973 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $11,126 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,126 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −18.43% |
Prices have softened 18.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 119 listings available, which suggests you have a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul a good car?
Yes — the 4.65/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise the spacious interior, great gas mileage, comfort, handling, and affordability, which fits the Soul’s role as an affordable, easy-to-live-with subcompact hatchback with a distinctive shape. For you, that means it makes the most sense if you want something practical and a little different from the usual small-car crowd. With 26.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Kia Soul reliable?
Owners rate it 4.65/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback leans toward dependable everyday use, with praise for the car’s comfort, fuel economy, and solid performance. That kind of feedback suggests the Soul can be a sensible used buy if you want a small vehicle you can count on for routine commuting and errands. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is finding one that has been maintained well, since condition and upkeep will matter more than the model’s basic appeal.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Kia Soul?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 119 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.43% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $8,973 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Kia Soul's resale value?
The current average of $9,076 CAD sits slightly below last year's $11,126 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can make the Soul easier to buy now but may also limit upside for a future seller if prices stay soft. If you plan to resell later, the current trend means your return will depend heavily on mileage, condition, and how well the vehicle has been kept. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand, but the broader market still matters.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.65/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Kia Soul or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 26.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 18.43% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.65/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the Soul’s roomy cabin, distinctive styling, and strong owner approval at a softer price point, the 2016 is a sensible place to focus. If you are especially price-sensitive, you can also compare nearby years to see whether a lower asking price outweighs the 2016’s current market position.
