CarGurus Analysis: 2016 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 143 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,946 CAD, 28.7% of 2016 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2016 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running rear-wheel-drive formula with a more modern, global-era design. This generation brought a sleeker, smoother look, coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and an independent rear suspension as part of a ground-up redesign. It was also the first Mustang Ford produced and marketed for a global audience, which helped broaden its appeal without abandoning the car’s familiar character.
For 2016, the Mustang offered Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-litre inline four-cylinder engine in base trims, while other available engines included a 3.7-litre V6, the 5.0-litre Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-litre V8 exclusive to the Shelby GT350 and the GT500. Transmission choices varied by engine and included two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That breadth of choice is a major part of the car’s appeal, and it helps explain why the Mustang can suit buyers looking for anything from everyday usability to serious performance.
There are a few cautions to keep in mind. EcoBoost models are known for oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. The generation also has a reputation for powertrain issues in general, so a well-documented example matters. Even so, the 2016 Ford Mustang remains attractive for shoppers who want an iconic sports car with strong performance, distinctive styling, and a wide range of configurations.

So beautiful, top up or down its a head- turner. Super comfortable to drive around town or on the highway, all good. Ford did a good job on the infotainment, plug and play to use Google maps. The sport mode really gets it while normal mode helps save gas. Best in class cargo means you can fit your stuff no problem. I have the 6 speed stick, notchy and fun all the time. The 4 cylinder turbo engine Ecoboost means the car is way lighter than the GT which makes this really easy to drive and nimble. The brakes are great. At 34,000 and have no issues, very reliable. I love this car. What a delight. They say things dont make your life better but this car proves otherwise!

The premium is the perfect mix of luxury meets sport. Plenty of options included adds lots of comfort. And this GT is fast with amazing handling and control. My wife can take it to the grocery store without being scared of it and I can drop it in sport mode and tear up the asphalt.

I have a very well equipped Ecoboost Premium. The car rides exceptionally well. The 4 cyl has plenty of power and pulls close to 30 MPG on the highway. The car is a joy to drive and is my 5th Mustang. Having owned some older generations, this is the best one yet. Lots of creature comforts in this model and a nice mix of retro and new.

2016 Ford Mustang Price Trends
CarGurus tracks the prices of millions of used car listings every year. See how the average price of 2016 Ford Mustang prices has changed over time.
See more price trendsHow much does the 2016 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,913 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $21,243 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $25,262 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,244 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.27% |
Prices have softened 5.27% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 143 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Ford Mustang earns a 4.85/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its fun and smooth ride, performance, handling, and stylish design, and many also like the value it offers compared with similar cars. That makes it a strong fit if you want an iconic rear-wheel-drive sports car that can still work as an everyday driver. With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive example.
Is the 2016 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many people find dependable enough to enjoy over time, especially when it comes to its overall driving experience and lasting appeal. The strongest reliability takeaway is that satisfied owners tend to keep recommending it, which usually reflects a trouble-free ownership experience for many examples. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is choosing a poorly maintained car, so service history matters a lot.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 143 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.27% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,243 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $23,913 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,244 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has eased, which can make the car more attractive to buyers today but slightly less favourable for sellers trying to maximise return. If you plan to resell later, a softer current market means your upside may depend more on condition, mileage, and trim desirability. Well-kept examples should still hold attention because the Mustang name remains broadly appealing.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2016 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.27% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $23,503 CAD, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $23,913 CAD average.
- The 2015 brings a major redesign with stronger technology and broader appeal.
The bottom line:
Buy the 2016 if you want the stronger current-market value story and a wide pool of listings to compare. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2015 is the better alternative because it costs less and still delivers the redesigned Mustang experience.
