Reviews SummaryThe RAV4 was last revised for 2019, and Toyota takes the if-it-ain’t-broke approach for the new model year, retaining the well-reviewed styling while updating the frequently maligned infotainment system of yesteryear. This review focuses on the gas-powered RAV4. The RAV4 Hybrid and the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) RAV4 Prime are each covered separately.
Reviews SummaryPorsche is synonymous with performance. From the automaker’s inception and first production model, the 1948 Porsche 356, it has built vehicles that are fun to drive and engineered with German precision and excellence. Well, mostly. There have been some duds along the way. But that doesn’t apply to the Macan, a compact SUV that is Porsche’s best-selling model. As it should, the 2022 Porsche Macan drives more like a sports car than a sport/utility, and it receives several updates to keep it fresh as Porsche prepares an electric replacement for the popular SUV.

The 2022 Porsche Macan retained much of its original design from its 2015 debut, despite undergoing several updates over the years. The model received a fresh styling update, larger standard wheels, and a new centre console with haptic touch controls, enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functionality. The Macan lineup in Canada included four models: the base Macan, the new Macan T, the Macan S, and the Macan GTS, with the Macan Turbo's high-output powertrain now featured in the GTS. Our test vehicle, a Macan S, showcased a Volcano Gray exterior with 21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels, exuding a sporty and upscale appearance. Inside, the Macan drew inspiration from other Porsche models, featuring a left-side ignition switch, a large tachometer, and a flat dashboard, complemented by red leather and metallic accents for a luxurious feel.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 maintained the design introduced in 2019, with the Trail trim standing out due to its distinctive two-part face. The Trail trim featured a more aggressive grille, blacked-out wheels, and additional cladding, giving it a rugged appearance. Inside, the Trail trim added orange accents, contrast stitching, and a frameless rearview mirror, enhancing its interior appeal. The RAV4 offered a range of trims, from the base LE to the premium Limited, with varying levels of upholstery and features. The RAV4's interior provided ample storage options, including a shelf above the glove compartment and generous door pockets, while its cargo space was competitive, offering 1,059 litres behind the second row and 1,977 litres with the seats folded.

The 2022 Porsche Macan offered a range of powertrains, with the base Macan and Macan T featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 261 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The Macan GTS inherited the 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 from the previous Macan Turbo, delivering 434 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Our Macan S test vehicle was equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-litre V6, generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, capable of accelerating to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono Package. All Macans featured a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission and a fully variable AWD system. The Macan S boasted improved steering and suspension, larger 20-inch wheels, and standard PASM adaptive damping air suspension. The driving experience was exhilarating, with precise handling and powerful brakes, though the brake pedal required more pressure than expected. The Macan S achieved a fuel consumption of 13.0 L/100 km, close to the official rating of 12.2 L/100 km.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 featured a single engine choice for its gas-powered models, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the RAV4's acceleration was not particularly exciting, it offered a reliable and unobtrusive performance. The Trail trim came with 19-inch wheels and all-season tires, sharing the same suspension setup as other RAV4 models. The RAV4's AWD system was standard across all trims, enhancing its capability in various driving conditions.
The 2022 Porsche Macan provided a comfortable experience for the driver and front passenger, with optional 14-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. However, the rear seats were cramped, especially for taller passengers. The redesigned centre console featured haptic touch controls, though it required the driver to look away from the road to operate. The Macan offered 488 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,503 litres with the seats folded.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 accommodated five passengers, with the moonroof-equipped model offering 958 mm of front headroom and 1,001 mm in the rear. Legroom measured 1,039 mm in the front and 960 mm in the back, with the rear seat being narrower than some competitors. The RAV4 provided ample storage options, including a shelf above the glove compartment and large door pockets. Cargo space was generous, with 1,059 litres available behind the second row and 1,977 litres with the seats folded.
The 2022 Porsche Macan came with a 10.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM, navigation, and connected services. The system included touch-sensing virtual buttons and proximity sensing, though the voice recognition system was less effective than those in some competitors. The Macan offered stereo volume and tuning controls below the screen, with climate controls separate from the touchscreen.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 introduced a new infotainment system, with an 8.0-inch touchscreen standard and a 10.5-inch screen available on the Limited trim. The system supported OTA updates, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The RAV4 Trail did not receive the upgraded multimedia system, which was reserved for the Limited trim, along with an 11-speaker JBL audio system. A 7-inch driver-information display was standard, with a 12.3-inch version available on the Limited trim.
The 2022 Porsche Macan included lane-departure warning and a reversing camera as standard, with optional features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. The Macan's safety technologies performed as expected, though it lacked more advanced driving assistance features. Parking assistance options included a surround-view camera and Park Assist system.
The 2023 Toyota RAV4 came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane-departure warning with steering assist, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The RAV4 was equipped with the TSS 2.5 suite, offering Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The RAV4 earned a 2023 Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS, reflecting its strong safety performance.
