2022 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Once dismissed as a “cute ute,” the Toyota RAV4 has evolved into a compact SUV to reckon with. From a range of efficient powertrains to a roomy, flexible interior and stylish exterior, the RAV4 has the goods to compete with the best SUVs.

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer Reviews Summary

Few automotive nameplates have kept pace with changing market trends like the Chevrolet Trailblazer, which has taken on three very different forms over a relatively short time span.

The Trailblazer name first appeared in 1999 on an appearance package for the S-10 Blazer, a compact SUV derived from the Chevy S-10 pickup truck. Chevy then applied the Trailblazer nameplate to a midsize SUV sold during model years 2002 through 2009. While not based on a pickup truck, this Trailblazer had the hallmarks of an old-school SUV, including body-on-frame construction and available V8 power.

Today’s Chevy Trailblazer has nothing in common with those predecessors except a name. Introduced for the 2021 model year, this Trailblazer is a subcompact crossover with car-like unibody construction shared with the Buick Encore GX, and tiny, efficiency-focused engines. With the Chevy Trax on hiatus until the 2024 model year, the Trailblazer is Chevy’s entry-level SUV for 2023, competing with the likes of the Hyundai Kona and Kia Seltos.

The only changes for 2023 are some new extra-cost paint colours, including Nitro Yellow Metallic, Fountain Blue, and Sterling Gray Metallic, along with an Iridescent Pearl Tricoat roof. Trim levels start with the base LS, and continue with the LT, Activ, and RS. We tested a Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ for this review.

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

9/10

The 2022 Toyota RAV4, a continuation of a 2019 redesign, was a mature crossover SUV that had evolved significantly from its original "cute ute" categorization. Its exterior design, while blending in with the current crossover trends, featured distinctive angular flourishes and crisp lines that set it apart upon closer inspection. The RAV4's expressive headlights and snub-nosed grille contributed to a playful yet aggressive appearance. Inside, the RAV4 boasted a layered dash with contrasting textures and colours, anchored by a straightforward centre stack. The interior design included unique circuit-board-inspired patterns that tied various elements together, enhancing the overall aesthetic.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, resembling a smaller version of the Chevrolet Blazer, offered a balance of SUV toughness and upscale appearance with intricate lighting elements and dark chrome trim. The Activ and RS models featured unique styling elements, with the Activ model aiming for a rugged look and the RS model adopting a sportier appearance. The Trailblazer's contrasting roof options added a distinctive and retro touch, although this feature was not unique to Chevy. Inside, the Trailblazer's cabin featured a mix of leatherette upholstery and copper-toned trim, providing a touch of personality. While not screaming "outdoor adventure," the interior design included distinctive touches like grab handles and a creased dashboard.

Performance

2022 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 offered three powertrains, with the gasoline-only model featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on higher trims. The RAV4 Hybrid combined a 2.5-litre engine with an electric motor, delivering 217 horsepower and impressive fuel economy. The RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid was the most powerful, with 302 horsepower and the ability to run on electricity alone for up to 68 kilometres. The RAV4's handling was car-like, with a four-wheel independent suspension and dynamic torque vectoring for improved cornering.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer shared its platform with the Buick Encore GX and offered two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The standard 1.2-litre engine produced 137 horsepower, while the optional 1.3-litre engine delivered 155 horsepower. The Trailblazer's all-wheel-drive models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, while front-wheel-drive models used a continuously variable transmission. The Trailblazer Activ model had dampers tuned for gravel roads, providing a composed and nimble ride. However, the selectable all-wheel-drive system required manual engagement, unlike competitors' automatic systems. The Trailblazer's drive modes included Normal, Sport, and Snow, though the differences were subtle.

Form and function

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

7/10

The 2022 Toyota RAV4, classified as a small SUV, offered ample cargo space with 1,059 litres behind the second row and up to 1,977 litres with the seats folded. It had a healthy payload capacity and towing capabilities, with different models offering varying towing limits. Inside, the RAV4 provided comfortable seating for four, with plenty of space for front passengers and adequate room for rear passengers. The interior featured numerous storage options, including cupholders, bottle holders, and a roomy glove compartment.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer, despite being one of the smallest SUVs, offered decent utility with generous headroom and mid-pack legroom. Its cargo space measured 716 litres with the rear seats up and 1,540 litres with them folded, making it competitive in its segment. However, the Trailblazer's towing capacity was limited to 454 kilograms. The interior included smart storage solutions, such as a covered storage bin, deep tray, and cupholders, although the small carve-out above the dashboard's function was unclear.

Technology

2022 Toyota RAV4

2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer

8/10

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 came equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen, JBL audio system, and additional features like navigation and Safety Connect. The RAV4 Prime showcased advanced technology with multiple USB ports, auxiliary power outlets, and available features like a wireless charging pad and bird’s-eye view camera system.

The 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Optional upgrades included an 8-inch touchscreen, Bose audio system, and wireless phone charging. While the Trailblazer's tech offerings were adequate for most buyers, the lack of a fully digital instrument cluster and relatively small optional touchscreen might not satisfy tech-savvy consumers.
