Reviews Summary

Redesigned this year, the 2025 Countryman grows in size but remains a small crossover SUV. Expressively styled, infused with parent company BMW’s engineering and technology, and packed with cheeky Mini quirks, the Countryman is available in S All4, John Cooper Works All4, and electric SE All4 model series, each equipped with standard All4 all-wheel drive (AWD). It can comfortably hold rear-seat passengers, carries a competitive amount of cargo, and remains fun to drive.

Verdict: With prices starting at around $45,000 in Canada before fees, the Mini Countryman sells in entry-level luxury territory. However, anyone expecting plush refinement will want to shop elsewhere because the Countryman is decidedly rough around the edges. We begrudgingly accept its quirks in exchange for its personality, but many people likely won’t.

Reviews Summary

Like many brands, crossover SUVs are now Buick's stock and trade. The venerable General Motors division now exclusively sells crossovers, in fact. And for the 2024 model year, there's a new name in the lineup.

The 2024 Buick Envista is the company's new entry-level subcompact crossover, replacing the Buick Encore and slotting below the Buick Encore GX (which confusingly keeps that name despite there no longer being a standard Encore). The Envista shares most hardware with the redesigned 2024 Chevrolet Trax but, as with all Buick models, it aims for a more upscale feel than its Bowtie-badged counterpart.

This new model launches in three guises, with Canada receiving the same trim line-up as the U.S. The Envista Preferred is the base model, the Sport Touring (ST) adds sporty styling touches, and the Avenir is the range topper. We sampled an Envista ST at a first drive event in Ann Arbor, Michigan, on some of the same roads GM engineers used to tune this new addition to the Buick lineup.

Look and feel

2025 MINI Countryman

9/10

2024 Buick Envista

9/10

The 2024 Buick Envista, while sharing its platform with the Chevy Trax, took a distinct styling path. Its sloping roofline gave it a "crossover coupe" appearance, reminiscent of more upscale models like the BMW X2, X4, and X6. Although a more traditional roofline might have enhanced rear visibility, the design was deemed acceptable. The Envista's front-end styling, inspired by the Buick Wildcat EV concept, featured a split lighting design with thin daytime running lights above and real headlights flanking the grille. This sleek design was a first for Buick, setting the Envista apart from models like the Envision and Encore GX. The interior, while similar to the Trax, offered a more streamlined look with softer materials, though some textures felt artificial. Overall, the Envista's cabin was a slight upgrade from the Trax, aligning with its entry-level status.

The 2025 MINI Countryman retained traditional Mini design elements, such as wide-eyed headlights and a floating roof, wrapped in modern sheet metal. Depending on the model and options, the Countryman could appear as a conservative crossover or a performance SUV. The Countryman S was popular, while the John Cooper Works (JCW) offered more power, and the SE was an electric model. Canadian prices ranged from $49,269 to $63,269. The Countryman S test vehicle featured Premier+ trim, bright British Racing Green paint, and 20-inch wheels. Despite some design choices not being universally appealing, the Countryman made a bold statement. The interior, with its Petrol Blue fabric and Vintage Brown leather, exuded quality, making the Countryman a stylish choice in a crowded SUV market.

2024 Buick Envista

4/10

The 2024 Buick Envista featured a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive. This setup, shared with the Trax, offered a refined driving experience, delivering power smoothly. Unlike its predecessor, the Buick Encore, the Envista did not offer all-wheel drive, differentiating it from the Encore GX. The Envista's suspension included a torsion-beam rear setup for base models, while models with 19-inch wheels had a Buick-exclusive Watts Link rear suspension, enhancing ride quality. The front suspension used a MacPherson strut setup with Buick-specific tuning. The Envista handled bumps well but felt unsettled on less-than-perfect roads. Despite its small engine, the Envista accelerated confidently, offering a quieter and more comfortable ride than the Trax.

The 2025 MINI Countryman S boasted a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It accelerated to 100 km/h in about 6.4 seconds and had a towing capacity of 1,587 kilograms. The Countryman offered different driving modes, altering engine sound and dynamics. However, the Countryman lacked refinement, with clunky shifting and a noisy ride. The steering had an on-centre dead spot, and the brakes were touchy. Despite these issues, the Countryman was fun to drive, especially in Go Kart mode. Fuel economy was estimated at 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres, but the test vehicle returned 9.6 L/100 km.

Form and function

2024 Buick Envista

8/10

The 2024 Buick Envista was 36 centimetres longer than the Buick Encore, with a 14.5-centimetre wheelbase stretch, offering more interior space. Rear-seat legroom increased by 7.6 cm, and shoulder room grew by about 5 cm. However, headroom decreased slightly due to the coupe-like roofline. The seats were comfortable, and a power moonroof was optional on higher trims. The Envista's design provided good visibility, but cargo space was limited, with 586 litres with the rear seats up and 1,189 litres with them folded, less than the Trax.

The 2025 MINI Countryman offered seating for four adults, with comfortable front seats and good visibility. The rear seat was snug but comfortable, with air vents and USB ports enhancing passenger satisfaction. Storage was generous, with a power tailgate revealing 708 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,591 litres with the rear seats folded. The Countryman's unique storage solutions added to its practicality.

Technology

2024 Buick Envista

6/10

The 2024 Buick Envista came with an 11-inch touchscreen and 8-inch digital instrument cluster as standard, along with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and phone charging. The interface was user-friendly, with physical controls for climate and audio. However, the centre stack's tilt made controls a bit of a reach for passengers. The Envista lacked some advanced tech features, like a head-up display, but offered a good amount of standard tech for its price range.

The 2025 MINI Countryman featured a 9.4-inch OLED touchscreen with Mini's latest operating system. It included cloud-based navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Harman Kardon audio system. However, the interface was cluttered, and the Intelligent Personal Assistant was inactive during testing. The head-up display was helpful, given the centre display's complexity.

Safety

The 2024 Buick Envista's crash-test ratings were unavailable, but it came with standard driver assist features like automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring. In Canada, adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert were also standard.

The 2025 MINI Countryman was well-equipped with safety features, including forward collision warning, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot monitoring. It also offered adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assist. The Countryman was named a "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS in 2024.
