2024 Chevrolet Traverse vs 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid marked a significant shift in design for the model, presenting a more assertive and truck-like appearance compared to its predecessors. It was longer and wider, with a muscular stance that was visually evident. The classic D-pillar taillights were updated to feature three L shapes, contributing to a modern and aggressive look. The CR-V Hybrid Touring trim, which we tested, came with black roof rails, mirrors, and wheels, enhancing its sporty aesthetic. Inside, the CR-V Hybrid followed the design cues of the 2022 Civic and 2023 HR-V, with a premium feel and high-quality materials, including contrast stitching on the seats and steering wheel.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, available in LT, Z71, and RS trims, introduced the Z71 as a new addition for those interested in moderate off-roading. While not designed for extreme terrains, it was capable of handling rugged paths. The Traverse's pricing was competitive, with the LT starting at $50,833 and the RS reaching $65,733. Our test vehicle, a Z71 model, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. The interior, with Jet Black and "Torch Red" accents, offered optional synthetic leather seating. The Traverse provided a comfortable ride, with a power-folding third row and a spacious cargo area, making it a practical choice for families.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid offered a simplified powertrain choice, featuring a hybrid system that combined a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with two electric motors, producing 204 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque. This made it the most powerful CR-V to date, with a top speed of 185 km/h. The hybrid system was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and included four drive modes: Snow, Sport, Normal, and Econ. The CR-V Hybrid also introduced a "B" shifter position for increased regenerative braking, enhancing fuel efficiency. It achieved an estimated fuel consumption of 6.0 L/100 km in the city, 6.9 on the highway, and 6.4 combined.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine provided an 18-horsepower increase and a 50 lb-ft boost in torque compared to the V6. All-wheel drive was standard across all trims, with the Z71 featuring a more advanced dual-clutch system. The Traverse offered satisfactory acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust note. The ride quality was commendable, even with all-terrain tires and extra ground clearance. Fuel economy was rated at 12.4 L/100 km in the city, 9.9 on the highway, and 11.3 combined.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid's larger exterior translated to increased interior space, offering 1,028 litres of cargo space with the rear seats up and 2,030 litres with them folded. Rear seat legroom increased to 1,042 mm, accommodating taller passengers comfortably. The CR-V featured wide-opening rear doors and an improved LATCH system for easy access and car seat installation. The interior boasted eight cupholders and a cubby for smartphones, with a traditional console design providing ample storage.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered seating for eight in the LT and Z71 trims, with the RS featuring second-row captain's chairs for seven-passenger capacity. The Smart Slide second-row seats facilitated access to the third row, which could accommodate average-size adults. The Traverse provided 648 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,764 litres with the seats folded. Storage options included a hidden area under the centre console and an underfloor bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, though the third row had limited views due to the rear fender design.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display with physical volume and tuning knobs, while the EX-L and Hybrid Touring trims had a 9-inch screen. The CR-V Hybrid was well-equipped with USB ports, Bluetooth, dual-zone climate control, heated mirrors, and seats. The Hybrid Touring trim added wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless charging pad, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. Honda's smart navigation system optimized fuel efficiency based on the route.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse introduced a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, standard across all models, with rapid response times and simple menus. An 11-inch digital instrument display provided customizable information. The system ran on Google-based software, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Traverse retained physical controls for volume and HVAC functions, though the driving mode button was less prominently placed. The Super Cruise hands-free driving aid was available for the first time, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads.

The 2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Honda Sensing suite included collision mitigation, road-departure mitigation, and lane-keeping assist, all improved for 2023. New features included traffic jam assist, traffic sign recognition, and low-speed braking control. The CR-V earned a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS and five stars from the NHTSA.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not yet been crash-tested by the NHTSA or IIHS at the time of our review. However, it offered a wide range of standard driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. The Traverse also featured a surround-view parking camera and rear pedestrian alert, providing peace of mind during our test drive.
