2022 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

Lots of people think they need a traditional, truck-based, full-size SUV. But they don’t. You can whittle down the reasons to spend thousands more on something like a Chevy Tahoe to three things. The first is a need to tow more than 5,000 pounds of trailer. The second is to go farther off-road. The third is for incrementally more passenger and cargo space. If you have no need for such things, may we show you a three-row SUV called the 2022 Chevrolet Traverse instead?

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

A subtle refresh for the 2024 model year (launched in 2023) keeps the popular Mercedes sport-utility competitive against a wide roster of rivals, which include the BMW X5, Genesis GV70, Cadillac XT6, Acura MDX, and Volvo XC90, to name just a few.

Changes between the previous GLE and the 2024 model year consist primarily of a subtle redesign of the front grille (look closely and you’ll see it's now filled with tiny Mercedes-Benz star logos), reprofiled headlights and taillights, an updated infotainment system, and optional off-road-themed air suspension system that can raise the GLE 3 centimetres to clear obstacles. It can also shimmy this Mercedes sport-ute back and forth to help get it unstuck over tricky terrain.

Specific to our testing purposes, the 2024 GLE also ushers in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant called the GLE 450e 4Matic. As the last part of the name suggests, like every 2024 GLE, all-wheel drive (AWD) is fitted as standard. Yet the big news is what’s under the hood of this new model, namely a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder paired with an electric motor and 23.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack.

While fully electrified vehicles presently grab the most automotive headlines, a week spent on a test drive of the GLE 450e highlighted how easily this luxurious PHEV sport-utility adapts to all sorts of driving situations.

2022 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse was a practical choice for those who needed the utility of a minivan but preferred the aesthetics of an SUV. It offered a balance between style and functionality, with a design that included new headlights, taillights, and grille designs. The Traverse RS trim, in particular, featured blacked-out trim and 20-inch wheels, making it one of the more visually appealing options in its segment. Inside, the Traverse RS boasted black leather upholstery with contrasting stitching, though the use of hard plastics on the upper door panels was a downside. The interior layout was simple and logical, with user-friendly controls for the stereo and climate systems.

In contrast, the 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE presented a more subtle exterior update, with changes that were not immediately noticeable. The GLE 450e test vehicle stood out with its Twilight Blue metallic finish and 21-inch AMG wheels. Inside, the GLE exuded luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery, complemented by natural grain brown walnut trim. Mercedes offered a wide range of interior colour choices and trims, ensuring a high-quality cabin experience. The GLE's interior was spacious and comfortable, with excellent visibility and a host of comfort features, including power-adjustable heated seats and a panoramic sunroof.

2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse was powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. It offered a tow rating of 2,268 kilograms and featured various driving modes, including Tow/Haul, Snow, and Off-Road. The Traverse delivered a firm yet comfortable ride, though it required caution over speed humps and drainage dips. On the highway, it provided a pleasant driving experience, albeit with some road and wind noise. The Traverse's handling was predictable, with limited body roll and good performance in mountainous terrain.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE offered a range of powertrains, including the GLE 450e with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, producing a combined 381 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The GLE 450e accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 5.5 seconds and had a fuel economy rating of 4.1 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres. The transition between gas and electric power was seamless, and the suspension provided a smooth ride even on rough roads. The GLE's steering was sophisticated, making it easy to maneuver despite its size.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse offered seating for seven with captain's chairs in the second row, providing easy access to the third row. The interior featured power-adjustable heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and triple-zone climate control. The Traverse also had hidden storage compartments for added convenience.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE provided ample space for five passengers, with generous headroom and legroom. The GLE 450e's interior was light and airy, with excellent visibility. Cargo space behind the second row measured 630 litres, and the optional third-row seat was suitable only for young children. The GLE came with numerous comfort features, including power-adjustable heated seats, dual-zone climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. Additional features included a Burmester surround-sound audio system, massaging front seats, and a head-up display.

The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse featured a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, depending on the trim level. It offered Bluetooth connectivity, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Traverse's voice recognition system was responsive, and the available digital rearview mirror and surround-view camera enhanced visibility. The RS trim included a Bose premium sound system, though it was not particularly impressive.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE boasted a pair of 12.3-inch screens for the digital instrument panel and infotainment system. The MBUX system was feature-rich, with a learning curve, but offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and an improved voice command system. The optional head-up display and augmented reality navigation were praised for their clarity. However, the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel could be inadvertently activated, causing minor inconveniences.
