2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available in Canada with Advanced or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Its technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was designed with a focus on maintaining familiarity for those transitioning from internal-combustion engines to electric vehicles. Its exterior closely resembled its gasoline counterpart, with subtle differences like a solid panel in place of a traditional grille, trim-specific alloy wheels, and the absence of tailpipes. The vehicle's Scandinavian design sensibility was evident in its airy and roomy cabin, featuring harmonious lines and premium finishes, making it a genuine luxury SUV.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication and grace with its bold grille and quad-lamp headlights. The midsize SUV's elegant appearance was enhanced by its matte Brunswick Green paint and 22-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the GV80 continued the theme of luxury with quilted leather seats, metal and matte wood trim, and a unique two-spoke steering wheel. Despite a minor quibble with the infotainment screen's placement, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a comfortable and refined driving experience.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was powered by a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, delivering 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque through its dual electric motors. This setup allowed the XC40 Recharge to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The vehicle featured regenerative braking and a one-pedal drive mode, enhancing its efficiency and driving dynamics. With a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge and a DC fast-charging capability, the XC40 Recharge offered a compelling blend of performance and practicality.

The 2023 Genesis GV80, available with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6, provided a different driving experience. Our tester, equipped with the V6, produced 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. While not as quick as some competitors, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, offering smooth power delivery and a quiet ride thanks to its electronically controlled suspension and active noise cancellation. The GV80's performance was more about comfort and refinement than outright speed.

Form and function

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge offered clever storage solutions, including a front trunk for additional space. Inside, the cabin featured ample storage cubbies, comfortable front seats, and a slightly cramped rear middle seat. With a cargo capacity of up to 1,628 litres and a towing capacity of 907 kilograms, the XC40 Recharge balanced practicality with its compact size.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 impressed with its luxury features, including heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a tri-zone climate control system. The spacious interior offered a third-row option, though legroom was limited. The GV80 boasted one of the largest cargo spaces in its class, with up to 2,378 litres available when the second row was folded. Its towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms added to its versatility.

Technology

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a suite of driver-assistance systems, including Pilot Assist and a heat pump to extend its range. Its infotainment system featured a 9.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, running on the Android Automotive operating system. While the system offered over-the-air updates and seamless integration with Google services, the lack of a range countdown could cause range anxiety for some drivers.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment system had a learning curve, it offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, albeit not wirelessly. The GV80's remote smart parking assist was a standout feature, allowing the vehicle to park itself without the driver inside, adding convenience to its technological offerings.
