2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

There comes a time in everyone’s life when practicality rules. Usually, it arrives shortly before or after having children. In many ways, the 2021 Toyota Highlander is purpose-built to provide that practicality—especially in hybrid form. Redesigned for the 2020 model year, the 2021 Highlander adds a sporty XSE trim level (non-hybrid V6 models only), improved headlights on lower trim levels, and an upgraded Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ collection of safety features. These changes can only make the Highlander a more appealing choice in a highly competitive segment.

2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

Look and feel

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

7/10

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid initially presented a bold and distinctive design, characterized by its blunt and bulbous nose, which gave it an aggressive appearance. Over time, however, this design became more familiar and less striking. The SUV's styling was further accentuated by black windshield pillars that created a floating roof effect, and swollen haunches that attempted to balance the overall look. Despite these efforts, the design was somewhat overwhelmed by the cartoonishly-flared quarter panels, even when equipped with 20-inch alloy wheels. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid offered a two-tone interior with soft leather for the Limited and Platinum trims, though the dashboard's asymmetrical design and glossy black detailing could suffer from reflections. The controls were sensibly laid out, but the mix of illumination colours at night gave the gauges a busy appearance.

In contrast, the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge maintained a design closely aligned with its gasoline counterpart, subtly guiding traditional car owners towards electric vehicles. The XC40 Recharge featured a solid panel in place of a traditional grille, redirecting airflow efficiently. Its exterior was marked by trim-specific 19-inch alloy wheels and tasteful "Recharge" badging, while the absence of tailpipes subtly indicated its electric nature. The XC40's design was further enhanced by Volvo's signature Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights and a floating roof illusion created by thin pillars. Inside, the XC40 embraced Scandinavian design sensibilities, offering an airy and roomy cabin with harmonious lines and shapes. The SUV's impeccable assembly and finish, along with its premium feel, solidified its status as a genuine luxury vehicle.

Performance

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

4/10

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid transitioned from a V6 engine to a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, resulting in improved fuel efficiency with a combined rating of 6.7 L/100 km. However, this came at the cost of reduced power, with total output dropping to 243 horsepower. The hybrid system used an "E-CVT" to mimic an automatic transmission, but the driving experience was less than thrilling. The Highlander Hybrid struggled with hills and freeway speeds, and its engine sounded strained under acceleration. The steering was lifeless, and the ride was marred by unwanted body movement, though regenerative brakes were an improvement over the previous generation. Despite its efficiency, the Highlander Hybrid was not enjoyable to drive, especially in hilly areas.

In contrast, the 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge delivered an exhilarating driving experience with its 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack powering two electric motors, producing 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque. This allowed the XC40 Recharge to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The regenerative braking system was well-executed, offering a one-pedal driving option that maximized energy recovery. The XC40 Recharge's lower centre of gravity, due to battery placement, contributed to its stable and planted handling. Natural Resources Canada rated it at 2.8 Le/100 km combined, with a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge. The gasoline XC40 models, in comparison, had higher fuel consumption ratings and slower acceleration times.

Form and function

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Platinum offered comfortable accommodations for the driver and front passenger, with features like a heated steering wheel and leather upholstery. However, the second-row bench seat, while increasing seating capacity to eight, felt narrow and uncomfortable for three adults. The third-row seat was even less accommodating, with limited legroom and headroom. Cargo space was generous, with a maximum capacity of 2,387 litres, but storage solutions were not as practical as in previous generations.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions and comfortable seating. The front trunk provided additional storage space, while the cabin featured ample cubbies and nooks for modern essentials. The front seats were comfortable, though the rear seats were less accommodating for a middle passenger. The XC40 Recharge offered up to 1,628 litres of cargo space with the second row folded, and a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

Technology

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

8/10

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid came equipped with a comprehensive infotainment system, featuring a 12.3-inch touchscreen display, JBL premium audio, and connected services. The system was user-friendly, with large knobs and shortcut buttons for easy access. However, the sound quality of the JBL system was inconsistent, and the voice recognition system did not control climate settings. Driver Easy Speak technology and a video rearview mirror were notable features, enhancing communication and visibility.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was loaded with advanced technology, including a 9.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The Android Automotive operating system integrated Google services, allowing seamless connectivity. Over-the-air updates ensured the system remained current, though the range reporting method, displaying percentage rather than distance, could induce range anxiety. The XC40 Recharge's infotainment system was comprehensive, offering a modern and connected driving experience.

Safety

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

2022 Volvo XC40

10/10

The 2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, offering a suite of driver-assist technologies. The system included features like automatic high beams, dynamic radar cruise control, and lane departure warning. The Highlander received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though some aspects of the adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance were less refined.

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge received the highest Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, reflecting Volvo's commitment to safety. The XC40 Recharge featured an extensive list of safety equipment, including collision warning, blind-spot information, and lane keep assist. A new sensor platform enhanced active safety features, while Volvo's Connected Safety system shared road condition data with other vehicles. The XC40 Recharge's safety features were comprehensive and forward-thinking.
