2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The SUV that’s now known as the GLS was launched for the 2007 model year as the GL-Class, when Mercedes decided it needed a bigger, more luxurious SUV to sit above the M-Class in its lineup. The GL-Class and M-Class were rebadged the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class and GLE-Class, respectively, in 2014 when Mercedes introduced a new naming scheme across its lineup.

The current version of the GLS was introduced for the 2020 model year, and represents the model’s third generation. It’s aimed at other full-size luxury SUVs, including the BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, Land Rover Range Rover, Lincoln Navigator, and Lexus LX.

Four models are available in Canada: the base six-cylinder GLS 450 4Matic, the GLS 580 4Matic, the AMG GLS 63 4Matic+, and the Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 4Matic. Availability is currently limited, and specifications for the 2022 model year are not available. However, they are expected to be very close to those listed for 2021, which were used as reference for the information provided here. We tested a U.S.-specification 2022 GLS 450 for this review.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

Look and feel

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS presented a more understated and refined appearance compared to its flashier competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. Mercedes avoided the ostentatious grilles seen on models like the BMW X7, opting for a more subtle design. However, for those seeking a bit more flair, the AMG GLS 63 model offered enhanced visual elements such as flared wheel arches and a more aggressive grille, while the Maybach version was adorned with chrome accents and a traditional hood ornament. Inside, the GLS 450's interior, though basic by GLS standards, still exuded luxury with leather upholstery, a panoramic roof, and ambient lighting. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen were seamlessly integrated, providing a high-quality feel without being overly delicate.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler embraced a rugged, no-nonsense design with its boxy shape and iconic seven-slot grille. Available in both two-door and four-door configurations, the Wrangler allowed for a customizable open-air experience with removable doors and a fold-down windshield. The Wrangler's design was simple yet functional, with features like wide fenders and old-school hood latches. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean materials and straightforward controls. While lacking in ambient lighting and luxury features, the Wrangler offered a body-coloured dash and chunky HVAC controls, emphasizing its utilitarian nature.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 was powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, producing 362 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The EQ Boost mild-hybrid system added an extra 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in short bursts, enhancing performance and efficiency. The GLS 450's inline-six engine provided smooth power delivery, although the air suspension's lack of refinement was noted, with excessive body motion over bumps. The GLS 450 had a towing capacity of 3,500 kilograms, which was competitive but not class-leading.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of engine options to suit different off-road needs. The standard Pentastar V6 engine delivered 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine offered 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. For torque enthusiasts, the 3.0-litre Ecodiesel V6 provided 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a powerful 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid offered a 35-kilometre all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road prowess was enhanced by features like solid axles, differential lockers, and various transfer case options, although the 392 model's brakes and steering were criticized for their lack of precision.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a spacious interior with a standard seven-seat configuration, featuring a 60/40 split-folding second-row bench seat and two third-row seats. An optional six-seat version replaced the second-row bench with captain's chairs. The GLS provided ample legroom, particularly in the second row, thanks to its long wheelbase. Cargo space was generous, with 355 litres available with all seats in place and up to 2,400 litres with the second and third rows folded. The GLS's air suspension and power-folding seats made loading and unloading cargo convenient, although some ergonomic issues were noted, such as the touchscreen's reach and the centre console's grab handles.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's interior focused on practicality, with comfortable front seats and limited rear-seat space, especially in the four-door models. Storage for small items was minimal, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. The Wrangler offered 2,050 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, slightly less than its competitor, the Ford Bronco. The Wrangler's removable hard and soft tops provided various open-air options, with the Sky One-Touch power soft top offering quick and easy operation. The Wrangler excelled in providing charging points, with multiple USB ports and a 115-volt outlet.

Technology

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and digital instrument cluster, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and navigation. The system provided multiple control options, including voice recognition, a touchpad controller, and steering wheel touchpads. The voice recognition system was praised for its ease of use, while the touchpad controller was found to be overly sensitive. The GLS also included augmented-reality navigation, although the embedded navigation system occasionally suggested inefficient routes.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch touchscreen available. The system initially appeared complex but was intuitive once familiarized. The Wrangler's off-road pages provided valuable information for off-road enthusiasts, and the system supported Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity. While the Wrangler lacked advanced tech features, it included a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories.

Safety

6/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. Additional advanced driver-assistance features were available as options, such as adaptive cruise control and Active Steering Assist. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features were limited to a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning were only standard on higher trims or available as part of an option package. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the IIHS, with some trims receiving Poor ratings for headlights. The NHTSA awarded the Wrangler four out of five stars for frontal crash tests and three out of five for rollover ratings.
