2022 Lexus RX Reviews Summary

Now on the tail end of this fourth generation, the Lexus RX was last redesigned in 2015 with a mild mid-cycle refresh for the 2020 model year. But to consider the RX long in the tooth would be a mistake: this made-in-Ontario, Canada SUV is the automaker’s best-selling model. A carryover for 2022, the Lexus RX sees minimal changes which include new colours and a standalone fog lamps option.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX presented a modern and sporty design, continuing the aesthetic updates from its 2020 facelift. Available in both standard and long-wheelbase versions, the RX 350 offered seating for five, while the RX 450h hybrid model provided a three-row, 7-passenger option. The RX's exterior was characterized by sharp character lines and angular features, creating an aggressive yet restrained look. The F Sport models added a performance-oriented appearance with 20-inch wheels and unique styling elements. Inside, the RX maintained a luxury appeal with high-quality materials, though the centre stack felt dated. Comfort was a mixed bag, with some finding the NuLuxe seats less than ideal for long drives.

In contrast, the 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured subtle exterior updates, including new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, and a redesigned grille. The interior remained unchanged, with the Signature trim offering a luxurious feel with Nappa leather and real wood trim. The new seats provided improved comfort and support, addressing previous complaints. The CX-5's driving position was sportier, and the back seat, though snug, offered heated cushions and air conditioning vents for added comfort. The control layout was a point of frustration, with the infotainment system lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition. Cargo space was adequate, with 871 litres behind the rear seats and 1,680 litres with the seats folded down.

Performance

2022 Lexus RX

7/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2022 Lexus RX 350 was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 295 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque, while the RX 450h hybrid combined a V6 with electric motors for a total of 308 hp. All models featured an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive in Canada. Despite its sporty appearance, the RX's performance was underwhelming, with a lack of engine growl and sluggish acceleration. The F Sport models included performance dampers and adaptive suspension, but the drive modes offered minimal changes in handling. The RX excelled in comfort and cabin quietness, with a compliant ride and low road noise. Fuel consumption for the RX 350 was 12.2 L/100 km in the city and 9.0 on the highway, while the RX 450h hybrid achieved 7.9 L/100 km combined.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 offered a base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a revised 6-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The turbocharged engine option provided 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gas. The CX-5's driving dynamics were improved, with increased structural rigidity and reworked suspension for a smoother ride. The new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) offered Normal, Sport, and Off-Road settings. The CX-5 delivered a sporty driving experience with reduced body roll and improved handling. Fuel consumption for the turbo engine was 9.8 L/100 km combined, though real-world testing showed 11.1 L/100 km.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2022 Lexus RX offered 2,826 litres of passenger volume in the two-row model, with comfortable seating for four adults. The three-row L models had limited space for passengers and cargo, with only 210 litres available behind the third row. Cargo capacity increased to 1,657 litres with both back rows folded, though the seats did not fold flat. The RX featured thoughtful interior elements like a smartphone slot and adjustable-height cup holder, but the high load-in height for the cargo area was a drawback.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, supportive seats and a sportier driving position. The back seat remained snug, but heated cushions and air vents added comfort. The control layout was challenging, with the infotainment system lacking a touchscreen. Storage space was limited, with a small centre armrest bin and adequate cargo space of 871 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,680 litres with the seats down. The CX-5's cargo capacity was competitive with entry-level luxury SUVs but less impressive compared to mainstream crossovers.

2022 Mazda CX-5

The 2022 Lexus RX featured an 8-inch touchscreen display, with a 12.3-inch version available. The touchscreens were positioned atop the centre stack, creating access issues. The infotainment system included voice commands and a touchpad, though both were frustrating to use. The RX offered a range of tech features, including six USB ports, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, wireless charging, and a WiFi hotspot. The Lexus App provided remote engine start and vehicle settings.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 retained its Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display, lacking touchscreen capability and natural voice recognition. Users had to rely on centre console and steering wheel controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with text-messaging support and Mazda Connected Services. The CX-5 offered a 10-speaker Bose premium sound system on higher trims, with SiriusXM satellite radio available.

Safety

2022 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The 2022 Lexus RX came with the Lexus Safety System 2.0+, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, road-sign recognition, and a pre-collision system. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a head-up display. The RX was a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS with optional headlights but received four stars overall from the NHTSA.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 featured the i-Activsense package with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims added adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS, a distinction few rivals matched.
