2021 Volvo XC60 Reviews Summary

In the middle of a very competent trio of crossover SUVs, the 2021 Volvo XC60 impresses with luxury-level appointments, cool Scandinavian style, exceptional safety features, and a lusty powertrain. Volvo makes a case for its inclusion in the luxury SUV class with the XC60, and it manages to squeeze value out of every drop of gas, too.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2021 Volvo XC60

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 Volvo XC60, a product of the Swedish brand now under Chinese ownership, showcased a blend of elegance and innovation. Built on Volvo's SPA platform, the XC60 shared its architecture with other models in the 60 and 90 series. Its design featured a sophisticated two-box crossover style with short overhangs and athletic body lines. The front grille proudly displayed Volvo's iron mark logo, complemented by LED headlights shaped like Thor's hammer, adding a distinct Swedish touch. Inside, the XC60 offered a serene and luxurious cabin with Scandinavian design elements, including a 9-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen. The interior was characterized by harmonious textures and colours, with attention to detail evident in features like the elegant HVAC vents.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler was a rugged and versatile off-roader, available in both two-door and four-door body styles. Buyers could choose from a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, gasoline V6, turbodiesel V6, gas V8, and a plug-in hybrid. The Wrangler's design emphasized practicality and adventure, with options for fabric soft tops, hardtops, and the Sky One-Touch Power-Top. The High Tide model, based on the Sport S trim, featured LED exterior lighting, a body-colour hardtop, and a Gorilla Glass windshield. Inside, the Wrangler's interior was basic but functional, with durable materials and a focus on off-road capability. The driving experience was unique, offering an immersive connection with the environment, though it came with compromises in comfort and refinement.

Performance

2021 Volvo XC60

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2021 Volvo XC60 offered a range of powertrains, all featuring a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The T5 model produced 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the T6 variant delivered 316 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque with the addition of a supercharger. The T8 models, including the Polestar Engineered version, combined a turbocharged and supercharged engine with an 87-hp electric motor, resulting in a combined output of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque. The T8 Polestar Engineered model further increased power to 415 hp. The XC60's performance was characterized by a smooth and quiet ride, with excellent handling and torque vectoring. Fuel consumption figures ranged from 11.1 L/100 km city to 9.3 L/100 km combined for the T8 PHEV.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine and eTorque mild-hybrid system, produced 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and the optional Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system. The Wrangler's fuel consumption was rated at 11.2 L/100 km combined, but real-world testing showed an average of 14.0 L/100 km. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, offering an immersive connection with the environment, though it came with compromises in comfort and refinement. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were unmatched, but its on-road performance was characterized by loud cabin noise, vague steering, and a rough ride.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 Volvo XC60 excelled in providing comfort and practicality. Its front seats were highly adjustable and praised for their comfort, especially in winter conditions. The heating system, heated seats, and defrosters were effective in sub-freezing temperatures. The cabin offered smart storage solutions, with intuitive controls and glove-friendly features. The XC60 provided 613 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats and up to 1,410 litres with the rear seats folded. It was rated to tow up to 1,587 kilograms.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, with its rugged design, posed challenges for entry and exit, especially with a raised suspension. The interior featured durable cloth upholstery and a mix of plastic and rubber materials. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and windshield, requiring acclimation. Visibility varied, with some challenges due to the spare tire and roof design. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry difficulties but enjoyed good views and amenities like air conditioning vents and cupholders. Cargo space was generous, with 898 litres behind the rear seats and 2,050 litres with the seats folded.

The 2021 Volvo XC60 featured the Sensus infotainment system, known for its tablet-style touchpad interface. It offered smartphone integration with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system provided exceptional audio quality. The Sensus system's interface was intuitive for frequent iPad users, but it required a learning curve for others.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, based on the Sport S trim, had a basic infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The optional Uconnect 8.4 system offered upgrades like satellite radio and a premium audio system. The Wrangler's tech options included remote engine starting, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

The 2021 Volvo XC60 was a testament to Volvo's commitment to safety, earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings from the NHTSA. It came with a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keeping aid. Volvo's semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system was available, enhancing safety and convenience.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered optional safety features through the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group. These included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warning. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were less impressive, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. Safety features were optional rather than standard, and the Wrangler's design posed challenges for safety.
