2021 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2019 model year, the Volvo XC40 enters 2021 with one major change—the addition of an all-electric powertrain option. The 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge is the Scandinavian automaker’s first mass-market pure electric vehicle, in fact.

The Recharge will be sold alongside gasoline versions of the XC40, which carry over largely unchanged, and compete against small luxury crossovers like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, and Lexus UX. With its electric powertrain, the Recharge is a de facto Tesla Model Y competitor. It’s also priced similar to high-end versions of the Ford Mustang Mach-E, although the two electric crossovers have somewhat different philosophies.

In addition to that zero-emission powertrain, the Recharge gets an Android-based operating system, over-the-air (OTA) software update capability for all vehicle systems, and some updates to driver-assist tech. These changes don’t apply to gasoline 2021 XC40 models, but Volvo does plan to add the Android operating system to more vehicles in the future.

Since the Recharge is the main new thing for the 2021 XC40, that’s what we focused on for this review. While the gasoline XC40 is available in three trim levels—Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription—with standard all-wheel drive (AWD) in Canada, the Recharge is only offered in a single trim level.

2022 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

What does your average vegan internet mogul drive while waiting for their Tesla to charge? The 2022 Volvo XC90 three-row crossover can slot right in with an available plug-in hybrid variant, available leather-free features, and crunchy memories from the late 20th century. With fuel economy ratings as low as 3.4 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres, XC90 owners can hold their eco heads high.

2021 Volvo XC40

9/10

2022 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40 presented a traditional SUV aesthetic, characterized by its tall, flat roof and upright rear hatch, aligning with Volvo's signature design elements like the "Thor’s Hammer" LED headlights and a simple oval grille. Gasoline models offered a retro touch with an optional white contrasting roof. The XC40 Recharge differentiated itself with a blanked-off grille, unique badging, and model-specific alloy wheels, alongside a gloss black roof and mirror caps. Its Sage Green Metallic colour and subtle design tweaks made it an appealing choice for those seeking an understated electric vehicle. The interior boasted a minimalist design with high-quality materials, including real metal trim and a combination of Nappa leather and Nubuck textile, creating a cohesive and premium cabin experience.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 marked a significant evolution from Volvo's boxy past, embracing a more upscale, luxury-oriented design while maintaining its family-friendly and safety-focused ethos. As Volvo's flagship SUV, the XC90 featured a sleek and athletic profile, with pronounced wheel arches and a snub nose reminiscent of classic Volvo designs. The interior exuded "Scandinavian Modern" and "Swedish Luxury," with natural wood and metal trim, a sliding wood tambour cover, and a crystal gear selector handle. Volvo's commitment to sustainability was evident, with options for Nappa leather or a tailored wool blend upholstery. The XC90's interior was spacious and airy, enhanced by a panoramic moonroof, and offered a comfortable sanctuary from harsh weather conditions.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 offered a versatile powertrain lineup, with the electric Recharge model at the top. Gasoline options included a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base T4 variant delivered 187 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, while the T5 variant increased output to 248 hp and 258 lb-ft. The Recharge model shared its powertrain with the Polestar 2, featuring dual electric motors for all-wheel drive, producing a combined 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque. It boasted a 78-kilowatt-hour battery pack, enabling a 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds. All versions were electronically limited to 180 km/h. The XC40 Recharge emphasized comfort and quietness, with excellent ride quality and one-pedal driving capability. It also offered a towing capacity of 900 kilograms.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 provided three powertrain options. The T5 model featured a turbocharged 2.0-litre gasoline engine, producing 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T6 variant added a supercharger, increasing output to 316 hp and 295 lb-ft. Form and function

2021 Volvo XC40

2022 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2021 Volvo XC40, while not particularly spacious, offered clever storage solutions to maximize utility. Passenger and cargo space were consistent across the Recharge and gasoline models, but the XC40 fell short compared to competitors like the Tesla Model Y and Ford Mustang Mach-E in terms of legroom and cargo capacity. The frunk was small, with much of the space occupied by powertrain components. However, Volvo's innovative storage features, such as a removable trash bin, bag hook, and large door bins, added practicality. The centre console was designed to hold a phone securely, with optional wireless charging and a standard USB-C port.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 offered six- or seven-passenger configurations, with easy access to the third row. While the third row was best suited for children, the XC90 excelled in cargo capacity, offering up to 1,855 litres with the second and third rows folded. It could tow up to 2,250 kilograms, making it versatile for various needs. The interior featured ample storage, comfortable seating, and a spacious cabin, enhanced by a panoramic moonroof. The climate control system performed admirably in extreme weather, ensuring a comfortable environment year-round.

The 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge introduced the Android Automotive OS infotainment system, featuring Google apps like Google Assistant and Google Maps. This system allowed Android users to sync their personal accounts for customization. The hardware included a 9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Recharge models offered over-the-air updates for software-controlled functions and eliminated the need for a start button, allowing drivers to simply shift out of park. The Polestar 2's Digital Key feature was anticipated but not confirmed for the XC40.

The 2022 Volvo XC90 featured the Sensus infotainment system, offering tablet-like functionality with familiar gestures. While the system was intuitive, it occasionally experienced glitches and slow responses. The 9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen was positioned for easy access, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The Advanced package added a head-up display, 360-degree camera system, and advanced air cleaner. Keyless entry and a Harman-Kardon audio system were standard on higher trims. The XC90 provided multiple USB ports for device connectivity and charging.
