2021 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

Volvo may be known for sensible station wagons, but the XC90 SUV is the Swedish automaker’s de facto flagship. The current generation debuted design features, technology, and powertrains that have since found their way into most other Volvo models. Several years into the current-generation model’s lifecycle, the XC90 is no longer a trendsetter, but remains Volvo’s contender in the competitive midsize luxury SUV segment, with the automaker’s typical emphasis on safety features.

The current-generation XC90 launched for the 2016 model year, so most competitors—including the Audi Q7, Acura MDX, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE—have been updated or redesigned since then. The Cadillac XT6 and Lincoln Aviator didn’t even exist when this generation of XC90 launched.

A redesigned version is expected to arrive soon, so changes to the 2021 XC90 are minimal. All 2021 Volvo models are now limited to 180 kilometres per hour for safety reasons. The XC90 also gets a handful of newly standard tech features, and some small cosmetic changes.

Volvo offers the XC90 in three trim levels—Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription—with three powertrain options: T5 and T6 gasoline engines, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. Our test car was a range-topping T8 Recharge Inscription, combining the top Inscription trim level with the plug-in hybrid powertrain, which has the highest output of the three.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover from Jaguar Land Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

Look and feel

2021 Volvo XC90

9/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 Volvo XC90 successfully redefined Volvo's image with its design, maintaining traditional elements like a boxy profile and rectangular grille while adding softer lines and more chrome. The LED headlights with “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights were a distinctive feature. The Inscription trim was the flashiest, with optional 21-inch alloy wheels, while the R-Design and Momentum trims offered sportier and more basic looks, respectively. The XC90 shared its platform with other Volvo models, emphasizing its crossover nature. Inside, the XC90 embraced Swedish minimalism with high-quality materials, including matte-finish wood trim and optional wool upholstery. The Orrefors crystal shifter added a touch of luxury to the otherwise restrained interior.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover evolved its design subtly, retaining its broad, rounded face and large sheet metal expanses. The rear saw the most significant change with thin LED strips replacing square taillights. The long-wheelbase version emphasized its size further. Inside, the Range Rover simplified its design with fewer buttons and a larger touchscreen, offering a modern look. Premium leather seats and rich wood trim enhanced the luxurious feel, while the cabin's solid construction ensured a quiet ride. The Range Rover's interior quality rivaled more expensive luxury SUVs, providing a refined experience.

Performance

2021 Volvo XC90

7/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 Volvo XC90 offered three powertrains based on a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The T5 produced 250 horsepower, while the T6 increased output to 316 hp with turbo and supercharging. The T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid delivered 400 hp with electric assist. All models featured standard AWD in Canada. Despite its power, the XC90 struggled with acceleration on electric power alone, often requiring the gasoline engine's assistance. The XC90 excelled in ride quality with an optional air-suspension system, though it wasn't tuned for sporty handling. It had a towing capacity of 2,250 kilograms.

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: the P400 with a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder mild hybrid producing 395 hp, and the P530 with a 4.4-litre V8 delivering 523 hp. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in about 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover managed body roll well, providing a calm driving experience. Rear-wheel steering improved maneuverability, and the Terrain Response system optimized off-road capability. The Range Rover's ride quality was smooth, with a quiet cabin.

Form and function

2021 Volvo XC90

6/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 XC90 offered six or seven-seat configurations, with average headroom and legroom. The third row was tight for adults, and seats lacked support. A power sunroof and four-zone climate control enhanced the spacious feel. The Inscription trim featured 10-way power-adjustable front seats with massage but lacked a power-adjustable steering wheel. Cargo space was limited, with 317 litres behind the third row and 1,815 litres with seats folded. A hands-free power tailgate was standard.

The 2022 Range Rover provided ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats offered massage functions, and storage options were plentiful. The second row accommodated taller passengers with power adjustments and additional controls. The optional third row was accessible via a button, though tight for adults. Cargo space was 484 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,365 litres with seats folded. A split tailgate and adjustable air suspension aided loading.

The 2021 XC90 featured Volvo’s Sensus infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen, 12.3-inch digital cluster, and smartphone compatibility. A 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system and HUD were optional. The touchscreen was user-friendly, though some menu text was hard to read. The wireless charging pad was small, and only second-row USB-C ports were available.

The 2022 Range Rover introduced the Pivi Pro system with a 13-inch touchscreen, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, alongside a wireless charging pad. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound, with a 35-speaker upgrade available. Additional tech included Amazon Alexa, remote parking, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2021 XC90 received a “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the IIHS for non-hybrid models and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It offered extensive standard safety features, including lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

The 2022 Range Rover lacked crash test ratings but included standard safety features like collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system. While adequately equipped, it missed some advanced features found in rivals.
