2021 Volkswagen Atlas Reviews Summary

Introduced for the 2018 model year, the Volkswagen Atlas is the automaker's latest attempt to win over North American buyers. Built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the VW Atlas competes in the three-row crossover SUV segment against well-established nameplates like the Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, and Toyota Highlander. Changes for 2021 are limited to exterior styling tweaks and a reshuffled option list. VW also offers the two-row Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport.

2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in five trim levels. In Canada, FWD prices start at $29,148 before the $1,860 destination fees and AWD at $31,448, equating to a $650 increase for both models compared to the 2021 model year. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 on lower trim levels and is standard on higher trims. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At a fuel consumption as low as 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas underwent a styling refresh that included new front and rear bumpers, standard LED headlights and taillights, and a new grille design. These changes added 6 centimetres to its length, giving it a more extroverted appearance compared to the previous model. The R-Line trim package further enhanced its sporty look with unique bumpers and side skirts. Despite these cosmetic updates, the Atlas retained its MQB platform, which is shared with other VW models like the Jetta and Golf. The interior followed a minimalist approach, with a standard seven-seat configuration and available second-row captain’s chairs on higher trims. However, the material quality was below average, with cheap-feeling plastics and faux wood and metal trim.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued its mature design from the previous year, sharing several exterior features with other Nissan models, such as the V-motion grille and multi-level LED headlights. The Rogue's cabin featured a sophisticated layered dash design, with an electronic gear selector lever that freed up space in the centre console. The 9-inch infotainment display was positioned for easy driver access, and the instrument panel varied from a 7-inch display on lower trims to a 12.3-inch digital screen on upper trims. The Rogue's Zero Gravity front seats provided comfort, and the second row offered ample legroom. The fit and finish were exemplary, especially on the top Platinum model.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas

6/10

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four producing 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.6-litre VR6 engine with 276 hp and 266 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Motion AWD. The base engine provided adequate acceleration, but the driving experience was underwhelming, with rough shifts and poor ride quality. The Atlas had a towing capacity of up to 2,267 kilograms with the VR6 engine, but its fuel efficiency was unimpressive, with the four-cylinder model rated at 10.9 L/100 km combined.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured a new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine with 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, offering a significant improvement over the previous model. The engine's variable compression technology allowed for better performance and fuel efficiency, with ratings of 7.8 L/100 km city and 6.5 highway. The Rogue's CVT transmission had wider gear ratios, enhancing acceleration and responsiveness. The chassis and suspension provided a smooth ride with minimal body roll, and the electric power-assisted steering offered good feel and a tight turning diameter.

Form and function

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas was designed as a family hauler, offering 2,741 litres of cargo space behind the front seats and 583 litres with all seats up. It provided more third-row legroom than most competitors, but at the expense of second-row comfort. The interior featured logically laid-out controls and up to five USB ports, along with a wireless charging pad. The Atlas had a tall driving position, but forward visibility was limited. Parking sensors and active park assist were available on higher trims.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue excelled in interior storage, with numerous compartments for passengers' belongings. The second-row seat was a 60/40 split reclining bench, and the cargo area offered up to 1,033 litres of space, expanding to 2,098 litres with the second row folded. The Rogue's interior was designed with practicality in mind, featuring multiple charging ports and a wireless charging pad.

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas came with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The base model had a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims featured an 8-inch screen with satellite radio. The Digital Cockpit was available on upper trims, offering a 10.3-inch digital display. The Atlas was set to receive the MIBIII infotainment system later in the year, enhancing voice recognition and navigation.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue boasted a technology upgrade with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.8-inch head-up display on upper trims. Standard features included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, with wireless Apple CarPlay available on higher trims. ProPilot Assist with Navi-Link offered advanced driver-assist capabilities, integrating with the navigation system for predictive speed control.

The Atlas was expected to receive more advanced driver aids later in the year.

The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured the Safety Shield 360 suite, including automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. ProPilot Assist offered Level 2 driver-assist capabilities, enhancing safety in traffic and on highways. The Rogue received a four-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.
