2021 Subaru Crosstrek Reviews Summary

The Crosstrek applies the successful formula of the Subaru Outback to a smaller vehicle. Like the Outback, the Crosstrek is an ordinary car that gets a raised ride height and plastic body cladding to make it look like an SUV, plus standard all-wheel drive. But while the Outback is based on the Subaru Legacy, the Crosstrek is a derivative of the Subaru Impreza.

Subaru launched the Crosstrek for the 2013 model year as a replacement for the Outback Sport. The current Crosstrek was introduced for the 2018 model year as the second generation of the model.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is the same basic vehicle as before, but gets a handful of notable updates. In Canada, new Outdoor trim level joins the previous Convenience, Touring, and Sport, and Limited trim levels, and a 2.5-litre engine is now available alongside the previous 2.0-litre engine. The 2021 Crosstrek also gets an upgraded version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system.

2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek was a testament to Subaru's strategy of adapting to the growing demand for crossovers. By enhancing the Impreza hatchback with rugged aesthetics, all-wheel drive, and a higher driving position, Subaru successfully transformed it into a more SUV-like vehicle. The Crosstrek's distinct black body cladding, model-specific alloy wheels, and increased ground clearance of 22 centimetres gave it a robust appearance, setting it apart from the Impreza. The vibrant colour options, such as Plasma Yellow Pearl, added to its appeal, while the Subaru Global Platform ensured a refined driving experience.

Inside, the Crosstrek retained the functional yet plain interior of the Impreza hatchback. The addition of Plasma Yellow Pearl accents on the Outdoor grade's interior provided a unique touch, although the simulated carbon-fibre trim appeared less premium. The water-repellant upholstery was a practical feature for outdoor adventures. Despite its SUV-like exterior, the Crosstrek's interior space and design remained more akin to a compact car, offering practicality without excessive luxury.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX maintained a classic design reminiscent of its first-generation predecessor, with only subtle updates to its exterior. The signature spindle grille, running lights, and triple-beam LED headlights were the primary distinguishing features. Inside, the GX boasted a cabin of exceptional quality, characterized by the smooth refinement Lexus is known for. The interior was quiet, with the V8 engine's gentle roar being the only audible sound. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges. The Black Line Special Edition, based on the GX 460 Premium, started at $80,550.

Performance

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

7/10

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek offered two gasoline powertrain options. The Outdoor and Limited trims featured a new 2.5-litre boxer-four engine, producing 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Other trims continued with the 2.0-litre boxer-four engine, delivering 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The boxer engine's design, with cylinders parallel to the ground, contributed to a lower centre of gravity, enhancing handling. However, the SUV-like ride height somewhat negated this benefit. A six-speed manual transmission was available with the 2.0-litre engine, while most buyers opted for the CVT, which was standard on Sport and Limited trims. All trims came with standard AWD, and features like X-Mode and hill descent control improved off-road capability. Despite its SUV aspirations, the Crosstrek excelled on pavement, offering predictable handling and a comfortable ride.

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with a base curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. This powertrain enabled a 7.8-second run to 60 mph and a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms. The six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system, distributing power 40% to the front and 60% to the rear wheels. The GX's shape resulted in a high drag coefficient of 0.35, contributing to a fuel consumption estimate of 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) improved stability and off-road capability. Despite its age, the GX remained agreeable to drive, with refined ride and handling. However, the slow steering and touchy brake pedal were less appealing aspects.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek offered the same front and rear legroom as the Impreza hatchback, with slightly more rear headroom. Cargo space was competitive, with 588 litres available with the rear seats in place and 1,565 litres with them folded. While it offered more cargo space than some rivals, it lagged behind others like the Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos. The CVT-equipped models featured a rear-seat reminder system, and the interior included a handy cubby hole with USB and auxiliary ports. However, storage space was limited, and the driving position, while higher than the Impreza's, didn't provide the commanding view of traditional SUVs.

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear visibility. Its tall, narrow design made it easy to maneuver in various settings, though the slow steering required extra effort. The interior featured comfortable seats and well-placed padding, with physical controls for convenience. However, the placement of stereo and off-roading controls led to occasional confusion. The Black Line Special Edition offered NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim. The rear seat was challenging to access, and the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, and the cargo area was limited, with 328 litres behind the third row and 1,322 litres with it folded.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek featured the Starlink infotainment system with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and Bluetooth. Higher trims received an 8-inch touchscreen, with navigation standard on the Limited trim. The system included a secondary screen for additional information, though it seemed redundant. The 8-inch touchscreen was user-friendly, and the Crosstrek retained analog knobs and buttons for essential functions, ensuring ease of use.

The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replacing the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed below off-roading controls, making them less accessible. The infotainment display offered a dual-screen view, and voice recognition technology was quick and accurate. The GX also featured Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view and terrain-view cameras.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS. It featured EyeSight driver-assist technology, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. CVT-equipped models also had automatic high beams and reverse automatic braking. The optional blind-spot monitoring system was effective, though the positioning of EyeSight's cameras limited functionality in certain conditions.

The 2022 Lexus GX, lacking crash-test ratings, relied on standard Lexus Safety System+ for safety. This included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were also standard. However, the GX lacked some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems. The absence of these features contributed to a more straightforward driving experience.
