2020 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

By 2020 the Nissan Rogue was looking somewhat dated, having been on sale since 2014. Is it still worth considering, or are you better off looking at the newer model instead? The answers to these questions depend on who you are and what you value in a compact crossover SUV.

2021 Subaru Crosstrek Reviews Summary

The Crosstrek applies the successful formula of the Subaru Outback to a smaller vehicle. Like the Outback, the Crosstrek is an ordinary car that gets a raised ride height and plastic body cladding to make it look like an SUV, plus standard all-wheel drive. But while the Outback is based on the Subaru Legacy, the Crosstrek is a derivative of the Subaru Impreza.

Subaru launched the Crosstrek for the 2013 model year as a replacement for the Outback Sport. The current Crosstrek was introduced for the 2018 model year as the second generation of the model.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is the same basic vehicle as before, but gets a handful of notable updates. In Canada, new Outdoor trim level joins the previous Convenience, Touring, and Sport, and Limited trim levels, and a 2.5-litre engine is now available alongside the previous 2.0-litre engine. The 2021 Crosstrek also gets an upgraded version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver-assistance system.

2020 Nissan Rogue

7/10

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

8/10

The 2020 Nissan Rogue, available in S, SV, and SL Platinum trims, offered a straightforward choice between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The SL Platinum trim, priced at an estimated $37,998 CAD, showcased a bold V-Motion grille and 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels, lending it an attractive, albeit slightly dated, appearance. Inside, the Rogue's design felt older, with a waterfall control panel and rounded surfaces, while the plastic materials were less impressive. However, the padded centre console sides provided a thoughtful touch for driver comfort.

In contrast, the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek embraced the crossover trend by enhancing the Impreza hatchback with rugged looks, standard all-wheel drive, and a taller ride height. The Crosstrek stood out with black body cladding, model-specific alloy wheels, and vibrant colour options like Plasma Yellow Pearl. Built on the Subaru Global Platform, it shared a refined design with other Subaru models. The interior, though functional, was somewhat plain, with simulated carbon-fibre trim and water-repellant upholstery in the Outdoor grade. Despite its SUV-like stance, the Crosstrek maintained a comfortable ride and low wind noise.

Performance

2021 Subaru Crosstrek

7/10

The 2020 Nissan Rogue featured a single 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Weighing 1,664 kilograms, the Rogue's powertrain was adequate but lacked excitement, especially during highway acceleration or mountain climbs. The Xtronic CVT managed power well, but fuel efficiency fell short of expectations, achieving 9.4 L/100 km in testing. The Rogue's ride and handling benefited from Intelligent Trace Control and Active Ride Control, but its heavy steering and CVT drone detracted from driving enjoyment.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek offered two engine options: a 2.0-litre boxer-four with 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque, and a new 2.5-litre boxer-four with 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. The boxer engine's lower profile improved handling, though the SUV-like ride height introduced some body roll. A six-speed manual transmission was available with the 2.0-litre engine, while the CVT was standard on higher trims. All-wheel drive was standard, with X-Mode enhancing off-road capability. Despite the new engine's increased power, acceleration remained adequate, accompanied by CVT droning.

Form and function

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's interior posed challenges for taller drivers, with undersized Zero Gravity seats and limited seat height adjustment. Rear passengers enjoyed stadium-style seating with excellent thigh support and legroom, enhanced by a panoramic moonroof. In-cabin storage was limited, but the cargo area offered 1,112 litres of space, along with underfloor compartments and a Divide-n-Hide system.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek shared interior dimensions with the Impreza hatchback, offering competitive passenger space but limited cargo capacity. With 588 litres of cargo space with seats up and 1,565 litres with seats folded, it lagged behind some rivals. The Crosstrek featured a rear-seat reminder system and a front cubby with USB ports, though rear passengers lacked charging options. The driving position was higher than the Impreza's, with good visibility, but it didn't provide the commanding view of traditional SUVs.

Technology

The 2020 Nissan Rogue's infotainment system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM, with upgrades like navigation and a Bose audio system. NissanConnect Services offered remote access and safety features, but the 7-inch touchscreen's dated design and slow response detracted from the experience.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek used the Starlink infotainment system, with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen and an 8-inch version on higher trims. The system was user-friendly, with large knobs and buttons for essential functions. A secondary screen displayed redundant information, while EyeSight driver-assistance features were controlled via steering wheel buttons.

Safety

8/10

The 2020 Nissan Rogue featured Safety Shield 360, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included ProPilot Assist and a surround-view camera. However, the Rogue's 4-star NHTSA rating and lack of a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS highlighted its aging safety credentials.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek earned a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS. EyeSight technology provided adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. Additional features included blind-spot monitoring and reverse automatic braking. EyeSight's cameras were well-protected but limited in functionality under certain conditions.
