2022 Jeep Wrangler vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, a continuation of the third generation introduced in 2020, was a luxurious SUV that offered a refined and sophisticated appearance. Originally known as the GL-Class, the GLS evolved to cater to a more pragmatic clientele, providing a lavish alternative to other large SUVs like the Navigator and Escalade. Despite its size, the GLS managed to appear less bulky due to its softened angles and sleek design. Inside, it boasted a futuristic cabin with a massive digital screen dominating the dashboard, emphasizing its tech-forward approach. The GLS was available in three trims: GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63, each offering a range of standard and optional features to enhance comfort and convenience.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler was a rugged and iconic off-roader that offered a unique driving experience. Buyers had to choose between the classic two-door or the more practical four-door body style, with a variety of powertrains, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, gasoline V6, turbodiesel V6, gas V8, and a plug-in hybrid. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions available. Our test model, the High Tide edition, was based on the four-door Sport S trim and included features like LED exterior lighting and a body-colour hardtop. The Wrangler's interior was basic but durable, with a focus on practicality and off-road capability rather than luxury.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of powerful engines, starting with the GLS 450's twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, producing 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The GLS 580 upgraded to a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, delivering 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. Both models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The AMG GLS 63, with its hand-crafted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, generated an impressive 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. The GLS's adaptive air suspension and multiple drive modes provided a smooth and agile driving experience, defying its size and weight.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine and eTorque mild-hybrid system, produced 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, the Wrangler was well-suited for off-road adventures. However, its fuel consumption was higher than expected, averaging 14.0 L/100 km during testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, with its open-air design and rugged capabilities, but it also came with compromises in terms of ride comfort, noise levels, and handling. Despite these drawbacks, the Wrangler's off-road prowess and distinctive character made it a favourite among enthusiasts.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered three rows of spacious seating, with ample headroom and legroom for first- and second-row passengers. The third row was also suitable for adults, a rarity among three-row SUVs. The GLS provided 355 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 1,209 litres with the third row folded, and 2,400 litres with both the second and third rows down. The interior featured numerous storage compartments and a power-folding third row for added convenience.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, on the other hand, presented challenges in terms of entry and exit, especially with its raised suspension. The interior was basic, with durable cloth upholstery and a mix of plastic and rubber materials. Visibility varied, with some areas offering excellent views while others were obstructed. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry difficulties but enjoyed decent accommodations once inside. The Wrangler Unlimited provided 898 litres of cargo space behind the rear seat, expanding to 2,050 litres with the rear seat folded. Storage options were limited, with small compartments and netting for organization.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system, which included a large touch screen and a trackpad for navigation. It offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though a USB-C cable was required. The MBUX system also included a voice-control feature, allowing users to issue complex commands. The digital dash extended to the instrument panel, controlled by touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel, offering a customizable and tech-savvy experience.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's infotainment system was more basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The optional Uconnect 8.4 system offered additional features like satellite radio and a premium audio system, but our test model did not include these upgrades. Despite its simplicity, the Wrangler's tech offerings were sufficient for most needs, with options like remote engine start and heated seats enhancing comfort.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS came standard with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including Active Brake Assist, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Additional safety options included lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. The GLS also featured a full array of airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system, ensuring a high level of safety for occupants.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, equipped with the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, offered features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were less impressive, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. The Wrangler's safety features were optional, and its design required extra caution when driving.
