2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

The “S” in the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS name is meant to connect the SUV to the S-Class flagship sedan. In this sense, the GLS is the S-Class of SUVs, and it delivers on that positioning. The 2021 GLS-Class has three rows of spacious seating, and puts comfort above all else. The GLS can hold groceries, weekend bags, antique desks purchased from a roadside consignment shop—all things that would require a lot of negotiating in the S-Class sedan.

The GLS is one member of a growing fraternity of full-size, three-row, luxury SUVs. Their ranks include the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, and the more recent BMW X7. The GLS sets itself apart with a higher standard of luxury, and impressive performance… if you’re willing to shell out the cash.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS, a continuation of the third generation introduced in 2020, was a luxurious SUV that evolved from the GL-Class, initially intended to replace the G-Class. However, the G-Class's enduring popularity led the GLS to cater to a more pragmatic, affluent clientele. The GLS featured a more refined design with softened angles and a futuristic interior dominated by a massive digital screen, emphasizing its tech-centric nature. Available in three trims—GLS 450, GLS 580, and the high-performance AMG GLS 63—the GLS offered a range of standard features, including remote keyless entry, nine USB ports, and a 13-speaker Burmester sound system. Various option packages allowed for further customization, enhancing comfort and luxury.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, presenting a traditional SUV aesthetic with a tall hood and broad shoulders. It distinguished itself with a black roof, unique grille, and model-specific design elements. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a new body-on-frame architecture, independent suspension, and weight-saving materials. Inside, it offered high-end features like 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim. The Grand Wagoneer provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than its competitors, although it fell short in first-row space. It also offered substantial cargo capacity and a notable towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

6/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered a range of powerful engines. The entry-level GLS 450 featured a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six engine, delivering 362 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The GLS 580 4MATIC upgraded to a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, producing 483 hp and 516 lb-ft. Both models utilized a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes 4MATIC AWD. The AMG GLS 63, with its hand-crafted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, generated an impressive 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. All engines featured Mercedes’ EQ Boost 48-volt mild-hybrid system, enhancing performance and efficiency. The GLS 63's adaptive air suspension and multiple drive modes provided a dynamic driving experience, while its handling defied its size.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds, impressive for its 2,900-kilogram weight. The Grand Wagoneer featured standard 4WD with the Quadra-Drive II system, offering five drive modes for various terrains. Its Quadra-Lift air suspension allowed for adjustable ground clearance, enhancing off-road capability. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a leisurely pace, as its ride became bouncy at higher speeds, and its steering lacked precision. Its off-road potential was limited by its size, although it performed well on a short course.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS offered three rows of spacious seating, accommodating up to seven passengers. The front and second rows provided ample headroom and legroom, while the third row was suitable for adults. The GLS boasted 355 litres of cargo space with all seats up, expanding to 1,209 litres with the third row folded, and 2,400 litres with all rear seats down. It featured numerous storage compartments and a power-folding third row for convenience.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer seated seven with standard captain’s chairs or eight with an optional bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than its rivals, though front-row space was more limited. With 775 litres of cargo space with all seats up and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed, it provided ample storage. Its maximum towing capacity was 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its additional weight. The Grand Wagoneer included a standard sunroof, four-zone climate control, and large storage bins.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS featured the MBUX infotainment system with a large touch screen and voice-control capabilities. It included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though a USB-C cable was required. The digital dash extended to the instrument panel, controlled by touch-sensitive pads on the steering wheel. The system offered a learning curve but enhanced the vehicle's technological appeal.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer came with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had their own touchscreen, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system was available. The Uconnect 5 system, with an Android-based OS and OTA updates, powered the infotainment. While the screen was occasionally slow, the head-up display was clear and legible.

Optional safety tech included lane-change assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. It came with a full array of airbags, traction control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered standard safety features such as a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included intersection collision assist, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release.
