2020 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

According to a Harvard Business Review marketing study, there is such a thing as too much choice. And when the marketplace presents consumers with too much choice, there is a chance they won’t buy anything at all.

For the 2020 model year, there are more than 40 small or compact SUVs available, half of them sold by luxury brands. Small and scrappy Mazda offers three of them: the CX-3, the CX-30, and the CX-5. However, in a marketplace awash in Chevys, Fords, Hondas, and Toyotas, Mazda has trouble standing apart from the established crowd.

What’s the solution? Move upscale into “premium” territory.

Premium is where Buick, Fiat, GMC, Jeep, Mini, and Volkswagen play to varying levels of success. Combining the value inherent in a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology common to luxury brands, these premium vehicles attempt to provide more than mainstream for less than luxury.

At the same time, less is more. Because the 2020 Mazda CX-5 has but four similarly sized competitors in the premium class, that makes it easier for a consumer to choose, and more likely that a consumer will buy. The trick is convincing people that Mazda is a premium brand, and the automaker is taking a pragmatic approach to this emotionally charged solution.

2021 Audi Q5 Reviews Summary

Audi has made a commitment to electrification across its lineup. That takes the form of all-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). The Q5, which entered its second generation in the 2018 model year, has offered a PHEV powertrain since 2020 in the Audi Q5 TFSI e quattro.

2020 Mazda CX-5

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 was a testament to Mazda's commitment to delivering a premium experience beyond mere claims. This model year saw enhancements in standard equipment, cabin aesthetics, and noise reduction, all contributing to a more refined driving experience. The turbocharged engine received a torque boost, and AWD models gained an off-road traction assistance feature. With prices ranging from $27,950 to $41,900, the CX-5 offered various trims, including the luxurious Signature trim, which featured premium Nappa leather and real wood accents. Despite its upscale appeal, the interior's lack of contrast in the Caturra Brown leather slightly diminished its premium feel.

In contrast, the 2021 Audi Q5 presented a sharp, modern design that carried the Audi design language with distinction. Its expressive front, characterized by LED headlights and a prominent Singleframe grille, emphasized width, while the body featured crisp lines and a protective greenhouse. The rear boasted bold taillights, completing its classy appearance. Inside, the Q5 maintained a modern, uncluttered look, with smartly grouped controls and high-quality materials like real wood and metal. The 10.1-inch touchscreen was strategically placed for easy access, and the second row offered standard leather upholstery, ensuring a comfortable ride for all passengers.

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 offered a standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive was standard on lower trims, with AWD available. The GT Turbo and Signature trims featured a turbocharged engine, delivering up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium fuel. Despite its 1,734-kilogram curb weight, the CX-5 Signature accelerated confidently, though its fuel efficiency was slightly lower at 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres combined. The G-Vectoring Control Plus technology enhanced driving engagement, but the SUV's high centre of gravity led to excessive body motions during spirited driving.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV combined a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor, producing a total of 362 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. This setup allowed the Q5 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds, with a fuel efficiency of 4.7 litres-equivalent per 100 kilometres combined. The seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission and full-time Quattro AWD provided smooth power delivery. The Q5's handling was commendable, with minimal body roll and powerful braking. The ability to switch between driving modes, including a battery-only mode for up to 31 kilometres, added versatility to its performance.

2021 Audi Q5

8/10

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 aimed to compete with luxury SUVs by offering a more upscale cabin, though it was less spacious than mainstream competitors like the Honda CR-V. The interior featured elegant gauges and metallic accents, with heated front seats standard. Higher trims added features like ventilated front seats and Nappa leather. However, the front seats were small, and rear legroom was limited. Cargo space measured 875 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,687 litres with the seats folded.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV excelled in smart packaging, with its battery pack located under the luggage compartment floor, preserving cargo space. It offered 710 litres behind the second row and 1,503 litres with the seats folded. The second row provided ample legroom and headroom, accommodating two adults comfortably. The front seats were supportive and adjustable, with heating and optional ventilation. The interior featured practical storage solutions, including cupholders and cubbies, enhancing its functionality.

Technology

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 featured the Mazda Connect infotainment system, which, while upscale, required acclimation. The 7-inch touchscreen was touch-responsive only when stationary, and the system included Bluetooth, HD Radio, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. Higher trims added features like SiriusXM and a Bose sound system. However, the system's controls were not ideal, and voice recognition was unreliable.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV boasted a 10.1-inch MMI touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by the Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus. This customizable instrument cluster offered three views and was paired with ambient LED lighting. The Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system provided excellent sound quality, and wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto were included, enhancing the Q5's tech appeal.

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with standard ADAS features like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Higher trims added adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. The CX-5 earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, reflecting its robust safety credentials.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV shared its safety features with the gasoline model, which received top ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. The Q5 included six airbags, electronic stability control, and a rearview camera. Available driver-assistance features included adaptive cruise control and lane assist, ensuring a safe driving experience.
