2021 Audi Q5 Reviews SummaryAudi has made a commitment to electrification across its lineup. That takes the form of all-electric (BEV), hybrid (HEV), and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEV). The Q5, which entered its second generation in the 2018 model year, has offered a PHEV powertrain since 2020 in the Audi Q5 TFSI e quattro.
2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

The 2021 Audi Q5 was a sharp-looking crossover SUV that embodied the Audi design language while maintaining its unique character. It featured an expressive front with LED headlights flanking the prominent Audi Singleframe grille, emphasizing width with horizontal elements. The body showcased crisp character lines, and the rear was marked by bold, large taillights. The Q5 exuded a classy, modern appearance with exceptional fit and finish. The plug-in hybrid version, with S-Line trim and enhancements, stood out even more, boasting standard 19-inch wheels or optional 20-inch wheels. Inside, the Q5 maintained a classy and modern aesthetic, packed with technology yet uncluttered. Controls were smartly grouped, and the design unity was pleasing. High-quality materials like real wood and metal were used, and the 10.1-inch touchscreen was strategically placed for driver visibility. The second row was well-appointed with standard leather upholstery.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling with a tall hood, broad shoulders, and an upright profile. However, it distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, featuring laser-etched knurling in the slots. Standard 20-inch wheels, with optional 22-inch wheels, had acrylic glass-covered centre caps protecting the "Wagoneer" logo. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a new body-on-frame architecture, enabling independent suspension and weight-saving features like an aluminum hood and doors. Inside, it shared styling features with the Wagoneer but offered more convenience and higher-quality materials. It included 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests, along with standard heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Nappa leather upholstery was standard, with higher-grade Palermo leather available, complemented by aluminum and American Walnut wood trim.

The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV enhanced the driving experience by adding 114 horsepower and 96 pound-feet of torque with a 14.1-kWh battery, resulting in a total combined output of 362 hp and 373 lb-ft of torque. This setup, paired with the crossover's 4,665-lb curb weight, delivered impressive acceleration, reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. The Q5 PHEV achieved fuel-efficiency figures of 4.7 litres-equivalent per 100 km combined, with a gasoline-only mode rated at 8.8 litres per 100 km combined. The battery could be recharged overnight with household current or in 2.4 hours with Level 2 service. The drivetrain featured a seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission with full-time Quattro AWD, offering modes for battery-only driving, battery power reservation, or automatic hybrid mode. The Q5's handling was characterized by speed-sensitive electromechanical power steering, four-wheel independent suspension, and minimal body roll.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, with cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission, it accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds. The Grand Wagoneer featured standard 4WD with the Quadra-Drive II system, including a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential. The Quadra-Lift air suspension system was standard, offering height adjustability for off-roading, reducing aerodynamic drag, or easing ingress and egress. With maximum suspension height, it provided 25.4 cm of ground clearance and impressive approach, departure, and breakover angles. Despite its power, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a stately pace, as higher speeds resulted in a bouncy ride and imprecise steering.
The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV offered a balanced size, with smart packaging allowing the battery pack to be placed under the luggage compartment floor, preserving cargo space. It provided 710 litres of space behind the second row, expandable to 1,503 litres with the second row folded. The second row offered reasonable legroom (960 mm), ample headroom (958 mm), and shoulder room (1,435 mm). The front seats were comfortable and supportive, with a wide range of adjustments, heating, and optional ventilation. The interior featured practical storage solutions, including cupholders, cubbies, and a centre-console storage bin.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer seated seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80. However, space up front was more limited compared to these rivals. The Grand Wagoneer provided 775 litres of cargo space with all three rows in place, expandable to 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. With all rear seats folded, it offered 2,667 litres of cargo space. It had a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kg, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight. The Grand Wagoneer featured a standard sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins.
The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV featured Audi’s latest MMI 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, complemented by a centre-console touchpad. The Audi Virtual Cockpit Plus 12.3-inch HD instrument cluster offered three customizable views. The cabin featured colour/mood-adjustable LED ambient lighting and a Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system with 19 speakers. Wireless Apple CarPlay and wired Android Auto were included.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer boasted a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. It supported simultaneous pairing for two Bluetooth-enabled phones and a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, with an optional rear-seat entertainment system. The Grand Wagoneer featured a second screen below the main one for seat massagers and other functions. It used the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with an Android-based operating system and OTA software update capability.
The 2021 Audi Q5 PHEV had not been rated by the IIHS, but the 2020 gasoline-only model received top "good" ratings in most categories. The NHTSA awarded the 2021 gasoline model five stars. Safety features included six airbags, ABS with brake assist, low-speed collision assist, electronic stability control, and available driver-assistance features like Audi Pre Sense front and adaptive cruise control.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, and night vision. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring.
