2019 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

The BMW X5 redefined SUVs 20 years ago, leaning into the idea that you could have truck form and car function all in one package. In fact, BMW branded the original X5 as an SAV—a Sports Activity Vehicle—to help emphasize the fact that it drove as well as the company's famous sport sedans. And while that claim was a bit of an overreach, the original X5 did outperform its luxury SUV competitors on the road.

Now in its fourth generation, BMW’s midsize crossover continues to deliver on that two-decade-old promise: The X5 delivers car-like handling in an SUV form. And while the 2019 X5 stretches 2.5 centimetres longer, 7.5 centimetres wider, and 2.5 centimetres taller than last year's model, you’d have to look closely to notice the differences. Most obvious is a new and bigger kidney grille with active shutters. It has already received flak for being “comically large,” though in our opinion, it seems proportional to the rest of the vehicle—enough to make us wonder if the grilles on previous iterations of the X5 were too small. Inside, you’ll find a redesigned interior with an updated version of the iDrive system and a suite of Level 2 autonomous technology that unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. But that shouldn’t dissuade you from BMW’s revolutionary recreational vehicle, because there’s still a lot to love.

2020 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

When you live with a Toyota RAV4 for a while, it’s easy to understand why so many people buy this Canadian-made SUV. Available with a gasoline four-cylinder engine or a gas-electric hybrid powertrain (covered as a separate model), and in a wide range of configurations including sporty XSE, luxurious Limited, and rugged Trail, the 2020 RAV4 meets a variety of customer wants and needs.

2019 BMW X5

8/10

2020 Toyota RAV4

8/10

The 2019 BMW X5 was designed with a focus on delivering a sedan-like driving experience, despite its size and weight. BMW's approach was to prioritize on-road comfort over off-road capabilities, a decision that initially drew criticism but later proved prescient as consumer preferences shifted. The X5 offered a five-passenger layout, expandable to seven, though the third row was notably cramped. It featured two turbocharged engine options: a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder and a 4.4-litre V8, both paired with a smooth ZF eight-speed automatic transmission. The base model came with a comprehensive suite of features, including adaptive LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof, and a digital gauge cluster, with numerous optional upgrades available.

In contrast, the 2020 Toyota RAV4 underwent a redesign in 2019, adopting a bolder, more angular appearance. The RAV4 Trail trim enhanced its off-road capabilities with a torque-vectoring AWD system and a TRD Off-Road package that included all-terrain tires and a specialized suspension. The interior featured TRD logos, rubber floor mats, and a mix of quality materials. The RAV4 lineup ranged from the base LE to the Limited trim, with the Trail model offering a balance of equipment and value. The RAV4's pricing was competitive, and it provided a practical and versatile option for those seeking a compact SUV with off-road potential.

2020 Toyota RAV4

7/10

The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i was powered by a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. This engine provided a smooth and consistent power delivery, especially in Sport mode, and was paired with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission that offered seamless gear changes. The X5's fuel economy was impressive for its class, with estimates of 11.7 L/100 km in the city and 9.1 on the highway. The xDrive50i variant offered a more powerful twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 456 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in approximately 4.7 seconds. The X5's ride quality was enhanced by its Cluster Architecture platform and optional air suspension, providing a smooth yet sporty experience.

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. While not turbocharged, the engine offered adequate performance, particularly in Sport mode. The RAV4's eight-speed automatic transmission generally performed well, though it occasionally hesitated in gear selection. The TRD Off-Road model included a torque-vectoring AWD system with multiple terrain settings, making it capable on various surfaces. The RAV4's fuel efficiency was slightly below expectations, averaging 10.0 L/100 km compared to the official estimate of 8.6 L/100 km. Despite this, the RAV4 excelled in urban environments, with its suspension effectively handling speed humps and rough roads.

Form and function

2020 Toyota RAV4

Inside the 2019 BMW X5, the design shifted to aggressive angles and dual 12.3-inch screens for the iDrive infotainment system. While the design was appealing, some materials felt less premium unless upgraded. The seats were somewhat uncomfortable, with limited adjustability and ventilation. However, the X5 offered ample space, with 960 litres of trunk space expandable to 2,047 litres. The split rear tailgate and air suspension facilitated easy loading, and the X5 could tow up to 3,000 kilograms.

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 provided easy access with well-positioned seating and a sporty driving position. The RAV4 Trail featured SofTex upholstery with heated and ventilated front seats. Rear passengers enjoyed generous legroom, air conditioning vents, and USB ports. The RAV4 offered 1,062 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,974 litres, with robust roof rails for additional utility.

Technology

2020 Toyota RAV4

10/10

The 2019 BMW X5's technology was a mixed bag. The gesture control and voice recognition were inconsistent, and the iDrive interface, while well-designed, required a learning curve. The driving-assistance features, offering Level 2 autonomy, were unreliable at high speeds, though the adaptive cruise control was effective. Optional features included Parking Assistant Plus, a night-vision system, and a premium Harman Kardon stereo.

The 2020 Toyota RAV4's technology was user-friendly, with a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The infotainment system was easy to use, with physical controls for convenience. The voice-recognition technology was impressive, accurately responding to commands. Additional features included wireless smartphone charging, a 360-degree camera, and a digital rear-view mirror.
