Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — you’re looking at a 4.3/5 model with an expert rating of 7.3/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, sturdy build, and strong resale value, and many also like its off-road capability and versatile personality. The trade-offs are familiar: the cabin can feel tight, and some shoppers wish for more modern features and comfort.

For you, that means the Tacoma makes the most sense if you want a truck with a proven reputation and a clear rugged identity rather than the most polished daily-driver experience. With 31.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s still meaningful market availability to shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a truck you can count on over time, with many shoppers highlighting its sturdy build and long-term appeal. The expert assessment also reinforces that reputation by describing the Tacoma as having bullet-proof reliability and a hard-earned reputation for durability.

That said, used buyers should still weigh age-related wear, especially if the truck has seen hard use or off-road duty.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Tacoma ranges from a base standard package through SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trail Special Edition, and Nightshade Edition. Base trim is spartan, while higher trims add more comfort and equipment, and the TRD Pro brings underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, and other off-road-focused hardware.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get a standard 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic, with a six-speed manual available. It’s capable, but it isn’t especially quick, and road and wind noise are noticeable.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera, while lane-keeping assist and rear automatic emergency braking are not included.
• Infotainment: Base trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch screen. All Tacomas include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM, and wireless charging is available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 13.0 L/100 km in city driving, 10.5 L/100 km on the highway, and 11.9 combined. Manual-transmission models are rated at 13.8/11.4/12.7 L/100 km, while TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions are rated at 13.8/11.7/12.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trail Special Edition, and Nightshade Edition.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness and reputation without paying for extra equipment. It makes the most sense if you value the truck’s basic capability and don’t need the more specialised off-road or appearance upgrades.
• TRD Sport: This is the better fit if you want a more polished mid-range setup without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused trims. It sits in the middle of the lineup and should suit you if you want a balanced mix of equipment and everyday usability.
• TRD Off-Road: Choose this if you want the Tacoma’s off-road character to be a real part of your ownership experience. It’s the trim to target if trail capability matters more to you than comfort-first features.
• TRD Pro: This is the best choice if you want the most capable and most distinctive Tacoma. It adds underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, a TRD sport exhaust, and unique styling details, making it the clear pick for buyers who want the strongest off-road focus.
• Trail Special Edition: This is for you if you want a Tacoma with a more specialised personality and a distinct trim identity. It suits buyers who care about standing out as much as they care about the truck’s core utility.
• Nightshade Edition: This is the trim to consider if appearance matters most and you want a more style-led version of the Tacoma. It’s best for shoppers who like the Tacoma’s shape but want a more distinctive look.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, but higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 404 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.65% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,323 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $48,195 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,020 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also suggests future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. Even so, the Tacoma’s strong reputation and steady demand should help support values better than many rivals. Its broad appeal among shoppers who want durability, off-road ability, and a familiar truck feel should keep it relevant on the used market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests and lower marks in frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.

A key shortcoming is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, and its crash-test results trail the best performers in the segment.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the Tacoma’s proven reliability, strong off-road ability, and distinctive truck personality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,511 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $48,195 CAD average.
• It offers strong off-road ability and easy-to-use technology.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $53,386 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $48,195 CAD average.
• It brings a ground-up redesign with a more modern platform and standard advanced driver-assistance tech.

The bottom line: If you want the familiar Tacoma formula, the 2023 is the safe middle ground. If price matters most, the 2022 is the value play; if you want the biggest update, look to the 2024.
