Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.27/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, sturdy build, and strong resale value, and many also like its ruggedness and versatility. The trade-offs are a tight interior and a lack of some modern features, which lines up with the truck’s more old-school character.

For buyers who want a compact pickup that feels tough, distinctive, and capable for work or weekend use, the Tacoma fits that brief well. The market also shows 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a truck that feels sturdy and trouble-free over time. The expert assessment also describes it as having a hard-earned reputation for bullet-proof reliability.

Toyota’s ownership appeal is reinforced by the Tacoma’s reputation for durability, and the available maintenance support helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical trust and more about living with an older-feeling truck that may not satisfy if you want modern refinement.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim is much more spartan, while higher trims add leather upholstery, soft-touch materials, and a more polished cabin. The TRD Pro stands out with underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential, 16-inch alloy wheels, a TRD sport exhaust, a hood scoop, and blacked-out badging.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get the 3.5-litre V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic or available six-speed manual. Standard 4WD is included, and the truck is not especially quick.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera, while lane-keeping assist and rear automatic emergency braking are not included.
• Infotainment: Base trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch screen. All versions include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM, with wireless charging available on higher trims.
• Fuel efficiency: Natural Resources Canada estimates 13.0 L/100 km city, 10.5 L/100 km highway, and 11.9 combined. Manual models are rated at 13.8/11.4/12.7 L/100 km, while TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro versions rise slightly to 13.8/11.7/12.9 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: base standard package, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, Trail Special Edition, and Nightshade Edition.

Here's the short version:

• base standard package: This is the most stripped-back version, so it makes sense only if you want the Tacoma name and basic truck utility at the lowest entry point.
• SR5: This is the sensible step up if you want a more rounded everyday truck without chasing the pricier off-road trims.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a better-equipped Tacoma with a more style-forward personality.
• TRD Off-Road: This is the better-value pick if you want the Tacoma’s rugged side without going all the way to the top trim.
• Trail Special Edition: This suits buyers who want a distinct appearance and a more adventure-flavoured setup.
• Nightshade Edition: Pick this if you want a more upscale-looking Tacoma with a darker visual theme.
• TRD Pro: This is the one to buy if off-road capability is your priority, since it adds the most serious hardware and the strongest personality.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, but higher trims add more driver-assistance equipment than the base truck.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 422 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,356 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $47,974 CAD sits slightly below last year's $50,516 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests future sellers may not see the same peak values that were available a year ago. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should help keep demand healthy.

If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, the Tacoma’s established reputation can still support a strong resale position. The current trend is more about normalising from a higher point than signalling a weak market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.27/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and it scored four out of a possible five stars overall from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests but lower marks in frontal crash and rollover tests.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.

The main safety caveat is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, and its crash-test results trail the best performers in the class.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.27/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It combines the Tacoma’s familiar ruggedness with strong off-road credibility and a proven reputation.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $43,794 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $47,974 CAD average.
• It suits buyers who want a practical, capable Tacoma with useful tech and weekend versatility.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $53,748 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $47,974 CAD average.
• It brings a full redesign with a more modern foundation and standard advanced driver-assistance tech.

The bottom line: If you want the familiar Tacoma formula and a softer used price, the 2023 is the balanced choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the value play; if you want the newest hardware and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade path.
