How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 21.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.

There are 155 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a rugged SUV with real personality and a more premium feel. It earns a 3/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating, which fits its blend of strengths and compromises.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

It stands out for its classic style, broad customization, and the way it balances toughness with comfort and luxury features. The extended-length body also adds practical usefulness, and the lineup gives you plenty of room to tailor the vehicle to your needs.

The trade-offs are clear: the cabin can feel too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it is described as poor value for money. That means you should be shopping it for character, capability, and versatility rather than for the most polished on-road experience.

With 35.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to find a competitive example.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is built around durability and off-road toughness, with a solid structure and a design that prioritizes function. Its expert assessment also points to excellent build quality and fit, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.

Its performance notes reinforce that rugged focus: the Defender is described as an absolute animal off-road, with uncanny grip, incredible wheel articulation, and generous clearance. The permanent 4WD system and Terrain Response 2 setup are part of that capability, and the mild-hybrid inline-six is noted for seamless stop-start operation without shuddering.

On the cost side, the Defender’s pricing can climb quickly, and that matters for long-term ownership because higher-spec versions can be expensive to keep satisfying over time. For used buyers, the main risk is paying luxury-SUV money for a vehicle whose strengths are more about character and capability than low-stress ownership.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Defender 110 S gives you heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian sound system, while SE trims add fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming exterior driver’s side mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats. The X-Dynamic SE adds silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim, while the X brings air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display.
• Powertrain: You can choose from a turbocharged four-cylinder, a 48-volt mild-hybrid inline-six with an electric supercharger, or a supercharged V8. The six-cylinder is the better all-round choice than the base four-cylinder, while the V8 is the strongest performer but uses much more fuel.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system, a digital instrument panel with full-screen maps, a head-up display, and automatic steering when reversing a trailer are available, but self-steering highway assist is not offered.
• Infotainment: The Defender uses Pivi Pro with either a standard 10-inch screen or an optional 11.4-inch touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, and connected apps come standard.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder is rated at 14.2 L/100 km in the city, 11.7 on the highway, and 13.0 combined in the 110. The six-cylinder returns 12.9/10.4/11.8 L/100 km, while the V8 is rated at 16.4/12.7/14.7 L/100 km.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 110 S, SE, X-Dynamic SE, and X.

Here's the short version:

• 110 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Defender experience with heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian sound system. It makes sense if you want the Defender’s style and capability without chasing expensive extras.
• SE: This is the best-value trim if you want a stronger everyday feature set, because it adds fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, an auto-dimming exterior driver’s side mirror, auto high beams, and cooled front seats.
• X-Dynamic SE: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a few useful upgrades, including silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec seat trim.
• X: This is the most capable and best-equipped choice, with air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display.

The X trim also brings the most complete safety and off-road hardware package in this lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can be choosy if you shop carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 155 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.16% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $61,627 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $61,627 CAD sits slightly below last year's $78,163 CAD.

That price drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favour, which can make the Defender easier to shop now than it was a year ago. If you buy well, you may have less depreciation pressure than someone who paid closer to the prior average. For a future seller, though, the same trend means you should expect a softer resale environment unless your vehicle is especially well equipped or priced competitively.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender scored five of five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking. You also get six airbags, though that is fewer than you might expect in this class, and there are no front knee airbags or rear side thorax airbags. Available tech includes a 360-degree camera system, a digital instrument panel with full-screen maps, a head-up display, and automatic steering when reversing a trailer.

One caveat is that self-steering highway assist is not offered, so you should not expect the most advanced hands-on driver-assistance setup here.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 21.16% compared with last year.
• It adds the extended 130 body style for more practical versatility.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $56,202 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $61,627 CAD average.
• It bridges rugged character with modern tech and adds an expanded trim range.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $71,341 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $61,627 CAD average.
• It adds more features and broadens availability for one of its V8 engines.

The bottom line: If you want the most balanced mix of price, choice, and current-market value, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the cheaper route into the Defender formula, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the newer feature set and can justify the higher asking price.
