Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender earns an expert rating of 7.5/10.

The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

The Defender is built to go almost anywhere while still feeling refined enough for everyday use, and the lineup gives you a wide spread of body styles and powertrains. It is also described as rugged but refined, comfortable yet capable, and fun to drive.

The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and poor handling on pavement.

With 29.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to find value if you shop carefully.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The Defender is presented as a capable, refined SUV with a broad lineup and a four-year/80,000-kilometre warranty and roadside assistance plan.

Its off-road hardware and technology are described as confidence-inspiring, and the powertrain is said to deliver robust and smooth acceleration. The infotainment system is also portrayed as much improved, with fewer frustrations than before.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that premium capability can come with premium running costs and the usual uncertainty that comes with a complex luxury SUV.

What should I look for when buying a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 110 four-door is the sweet spot in the design, while the 90 looks stubby and the 130 carries more visual mass over the rear wheels. The X trim adds black exterior elements, upgraded interior materials, and Land Rover’s off-roading technology as standard equipment.
• Powertrain: The test vehicle’s turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine delivers robust and smooth acceleration, and the lineup also includes turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines, plus a turbocharged or supercharged V8.
• Safety package: The Defender includes automatic high beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. Lane-centring assist is available when using adaptive cruise control.
• Infotainment: Pivi Pro uses an 11.4-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, and connected services. The system also supports a configurable digital driver display.
• Fuel efficiency: According to Natural Resources Canada, the test vehicle should have used 13.0 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, and the observed result was 14.5 L/100 km.

Which 2025 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2025 Land Rover Defender is offered in 3 trim levels: 90, 110, 130.

Here's the short version:

• 90: This is the short two-door version, so it suits you if you want the most compact Defender shape and do not need the extra space of the four-door models.
• 110: This is the best-value choice because it is the sweet spot in the lineup, balancing the Defender’s rugged character with the most broadly appealing body style.
• 130: Choose this if you want the extended four-door layout and the most space-focused version of the Defender.

The Defender’s safety and driver-assistance equipment is broadly strong across the lineup, with lane-centring assist available when using adaptive cruise control.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2025 Land Rover Defender?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right one.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 144 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.58% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $83,445 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2025 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $85,024 CAD sits slightly below last year's $100,710 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has become more favourable for buyers than it was a year ago. If you plan to sell later, you should expect the Defender’s value to depend heavily on trim, equipment, and condition. The broader lineup and premium positioning can help, but the current trend shows that used prices have already eased.

Is the 2025 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender was not crash tested at press time.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Land Rover equips the Defender with automatic high beam headlights, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality. When using adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assist is available.

A Driver Assistance Mode menu lets you choose High, Low, or Custom assistance settings. The lane keep assist is described as decisive, though it did attempt to steer the Defender into a turnout area in one test.

Should I buy a 2025 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2025 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2025 if:

• 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 15.58% compared with last year.
• The 2025 adds the high-performance Defender OCTA and keeps the lineup broad and versatile.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $70,333 CAD, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $85,024 CAD average.
• It offers a rugged-yet-refined feel with expanded V8 availability.

Consider the 2026 if:

• It adds subtle styling updates, a larger touchscreen, and new colour and accessory options.

The bottom line: If you want the most current mix of capability, tech, and lineup breadth, the 2025 is the strongest all-around pick. If price matters most, the 2024 is the better value path, while the 2026 makes sense if you want the latest updates.
