The expert review adds that the Canyon’s engine and transmission work well together, and the truck delivers a good balance of on-road livability and off-road capability. GMC also backs it with a three-year, 60,000-kilometre basic warranty and a five-year, 100,000-kilometre powertrain warranty.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that its premium positioning can make repairs and ownership costs feel less forgiving if you buy a poorly maintained example.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Canyon?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Elevation skips some of the Chevy’s entry-level features, while Denali adds the nicest interior with laser-etched open pore wood trim and leather upholstery. AT4X stands out with a more dramatic interior and serious off-road hardware.
• Powertrain: Every Canyon uses a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic. In Canada, all models are 4WD.
• Safety package: The standard Canyon Pro Safety Package includes automatic emergency braking with front pedestrian braking and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, a following distance indicator, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and forward collision warning. Elevation and AT4 can add rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, blind-zone steering assist, rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, rear pedestrian alert, and a surround-view camera through optional packages. Those features are standard on Denali and AT4X.
• Infotainment: You get an 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Google Built-In. Elevation and AT4 use an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, while Denali and AT4X get an 11-inch cluster, a 6.3-inch head-up display, and wireless phone charging.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard 4WD Canyon is rated at 12.4 L/100 km combined, with 13.5 L/100 km city and 11.0 L/100 km highway. The AT4X rises to 14.3 L/100 km combined, with 14.3 L/100 km city and 14.3 L/100 km highway.

Which 2023 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation, AT4, Denali, AT4X.

Here's the short version:

• Elevation: This is the entry point, but it still gets the core Canyon experience, including the standard 11.3-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and the full 310-horsepower turbo-four. It makes sense if you want the Canyon’s premium feel without stretching to the pricier trims.
• AT4: This is the best-value choice if you want a more capable and better-equipped Canyon without jumping all the way to Denali or AT4X. It adds the off-road-oriented character buyers expect from the nameplate while keeping the truck’s strong on-road manners.
• Denali: Choose this if you want the nicest cabin, with leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, a larger digital cluster, head-up display, wireless charging, and standard advanced safety and convenience features. It suits you best if comfort and tech matter more than price.
• AT4X: This is the one to buy if you want the most serious off-road hardware, including front and rear electronic lockers, skid plates, 33-inch mud terrain tyres, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and Baja drive mode. It’s the most specialised trim, not the best value for everyone.

The standard Canyon Pro Safety Package covers the core driver-assistance features, but some advanced safety equipment only comes on higher trims or optional packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 GMC Canyon?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 202 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $47,443 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $47,443 CAD sits slightly below last year's $51,736 CAD.

That softer pricing suggests the Canyon has become a little easier to buy, which can also mean future sellers may need to be more competitive when it’s time to list. If prices stay near the current level, resale gains are likely to be modest rather than dramatic.

Still, the Canyon’s premium positioning and strong owner satisfaction should help it hold attention in the used market. Trucks with a loyal following and upscale equipment tend to stay desirable longer than more basic alternatives.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2023 GMC Canyon is available with a standard driver-assistance suite that includes automatic emergency braking with front pedestrian braking and cyclist detection, automatic high beams, a following distance indicator, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and forward collision warning.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Advanced safety features are not standard, which is one of the Canyon’s main drawbacks. Elevation and AT4 buyers need optional packages to add rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, blind-zone steering assist, rear park assist, adaptive cruise control, rear pedestrian alert, and a surround-view camera. Those features are standard on Denali and AT4X.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 redesign brings a more upscale feel, stronger tech, and a more powerful standard engine.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $37,163 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $47,443 CAD average.
• It offers a broader trim range and a more budget-friendly approach.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $51,204 CAD, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $47,443 CAD average.
• It adds a new AEV package that pushes the AT4X further with extra height, 35-inch tyres, steel skid plates, and a full-size spare tire.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of modern tech, strong performance, and current-market pricing, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If your priority is lower purchase cost, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want the most rugged off-road setup, the 2024 is the upgrade to chase.
