Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?

Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability, and they also like its good resale value. The Tacoma’s appeal is strongest if you want a smaller truck that can handle commuting during the week and outdoor trips or weekend projects when needed. The main trade-offs are its underpowered engine, cramped seating, and technology that can feel dated compared with rivals.

With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still enough market activity to find a Tacoma that fits your budget and use case.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?

Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, durability, and a truck that owners feel good about keeping for the long haul. The expert assessment also describes it as a supremely trusty and durable vehicle built for demanding use. Toyota’s first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps lower early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about dependability and more about living with the Tacoma’s age-related compromises, especially if you expect modern comfort and refinement.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base setup includes 16-inch steel wheels, a manually sliding rear window, air conditioning, an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a trio of USB ports, a 4.2-inch colour display, a 7-inch touchscreen, and Toyota Safety Sense. SR5 adds 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, heated front seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen. TRD Sport adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped shift-knob, wireless device charging, and a power-sliding rear window. TRD Off-Road adds all-terrain tyres, a trail-oriented suspension with Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and multi-terrain select. TRD Off-Road Premium adds a wireless charger, leather seating, blind spot monitoring, and a power sliding and tilting moonroof. TRD Pro adds unique exterior styling and badging, underbody skid plates, upgraded LED fog lights, and a TRD-tuned suspension.
• Powertrain: In Canada, you get a 3.5-litre V6 with 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, standard 4WD, and either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. It can tow up to 2,948 kilograms and carry 583 kilograms when properly equipped. The V6 is capable, but it can struggle to get up to highway speeds, and the gearing and transmission can feel reluctant.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional, so check whether the truck you’re considering has them.
• Infotainment: The base truck uses a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth. All packages add an 8-inch touchscreen and SiriusXM satellite radio. The system is simple and easy to use, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 with 4WD and a manual transmission returns 13.8 L/100 km in city driving, 11.4 on the highway, and 12.7 combined. With the automatic, it uses 13.0 L/100 km city, 10.5 highway, and 11.8 combined. In mixed driving, the observed average was 14.1 L/100 km.

Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: standard/Trail, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Sport Premium, TRD Off-road, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• standard/Trail: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Tacoma experience with the standard safety suite, the 7-inch touchscreen, and the basic utility features. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup, but you give up the nicer convenience and comfort upgrades found higher up.
• SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds alloy wheels, fog lights, heated front seats, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-focused feel and extra convenience features. The sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, and power-sliding rear window make it a more polished daily driver.
• TRD Sport Premium: This trim builds on TRD Sport with a more upscale feel, but the value case depends on how much you want the added comfort and convenience equipment.
• TRD Off-road: This is the one to target if you care most about trail use. The all-terrain tyres, Bilstein shocks, locking rear differential, and multi-terrain select make it the most capability-focused choice for rough terrain.
• TRD Pro: Buy this if off-road performance is your priority and you want the most rugged hardware and styling. It adds skid plates, upgraded fog lights, and a TRD-tuned suspension, but it is the most specialised and expensive route.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the range, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are reserved for higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.

• Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 340 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.89% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $43,600 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?

The current average of $43,600 CAD sits slightly below last year's $45,843 CAD.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favourable point, but it also means future sellers may face a market that is less aggressive than it was a year ago. Even so, the Tacoma’s reputation for reliability and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. If you keep the truck in good condition and choose a desirable trim, you should still have a solid audience when it comes time to sell.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?

The Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are optional, so you may want to prioritise a truck that has them. The backup camera is standard, but the image is very grainy, so you should still take extra care when reversing.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends strong off-road ability with standard V6 power and Toyota Safety Sense.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $43,221 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $43,600 CAD average.
• It adds standard dual-zone climate control and special-edition variety.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $48,070 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $43,600 CAD average.
• It leans harder into the Tacoma’s rugged reputation and reliability appeal.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the balanced pick if you want the current-year Tacoma experience at a softer price than the 2023. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for the newer-year premium.
