It also gets StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, brushed aluminium pedals, standard all-weather floor mats, waterproof rear seatback material, and a waterproof cargo tray.
• Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.4-litre flat-four with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It also has revised final-drive ratios, paddle shifters, and a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs.

Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.

Here's the short version:

The Wilderness is the one to buy if you want the most rugged, adventure-focused Outback with the strongest off-pavement hardware and the most distinctive look. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tyres, skid plating, X-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, hill descent control, and the unique exterior and interior treatment that set it apart. It suits you best if you value capability and weather confidence more than on-road sharpness or a simpler cabin layout.

The safety package is standard on this trim, but DriverFocus is not included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.

• Deal availability: 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 308 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $28,627 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?

The current average of $28,629 CAD sits slightly below last year's $32,508 CAD.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can be helpful if you're buying now but less favourable if you're planning to sell soon. A softer market often means future sellers may need to price more competitively to attract attention. Still, the model's broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction can help support demand over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, standard Outbacks earned a "Top Safety Pick+" safety rating for 2021. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives the 2021 Outback a five-star overall rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centring assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive LED headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.

One caveat is that DriverFocus is not included on this trim, even though it is available on Limited and Premier models.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.93% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The Wilderness adds the most capable Outback hardware and keeps EyeSight standard.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $26,346 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,629 CAD average.
• It focuses on practicality, reliability, and low running costs.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $31,401 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,629 CAD average.
• It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment, and new safety technology.

The bottom line: If you want the rugged Wilderness formula and strong safety tech, the 2022 is the right target. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play; if you want newer updates, the 2023 is worth the extra spend.
