Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.88/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, comfortable interior, and powerful performance, especially with the turbo option. If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and suits your tech expectations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX, GS, Kuro, and GT are the trims aimed at buyers who want slightly better fuel economy and more leisurely acceleration, while the Sport Design and Signature are for you if you want stronger performance and more premium equipment. The Signature adds premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood trim, and polished metallic accents, while the top trim also gets body-colour lower exterior trim. If you want the best value, the GT is the trim that balances equipment and price most naturally.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, and Mazda revised the six-speed automatic for more responsive performance. A turbocharged 2.5-litre is available for stronger acceleration, with output rising to 256 hp and 320 pound-feet on premium fuel, or 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular gas. All CX-5s have standard all-wheel drive.
• Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature adds a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses a 10.25-inch display with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, text-messaging support, and Mazda Connected Services. The screen is not touch-sensing, and there is no natural voice recognition, so you’ll be using the centre-console and steering-wheel controls.
• Fuel efficiency: The standard powertrain is rated at 9.3 L/100 km in combined driving, or 9.0 L/100 km when cylinder deactivation is equipped. The turbocharged engine is rated at 9.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2022 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 6 trim levels: GX, GS, Kuro, GT, Sport Design, Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price, including standard all-wheel drive and the full i-Activsense safety suite.
• GS: Choose this if you want a step up in everyday comfort and equipment without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Kuro: This is the trim to consider if you want the standard engine with Mazda’s Mi-Drive system, including Normal, Sport, and Off-Road settings.
• GT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds adaptive headlights and sits in the sweet spot between equipment and price.
• Sport Design: Pick this if you want the turbocharged engine option and are willing to trade some efficiency for stronger acceleration.
• Signature: This is the most premium choice, with the turbo engine standard, plus the most advanced safety and luxury features in the lineup.

The GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature gets the remaining safety upgrades, including the surround-view camera system and Traffic Jam Assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda CX-5?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards shoppers who compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 698 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.63% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $27,861 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $27,861 CAD sits slightly below last year's $30,831 CAD.

That softer pricing can work in your favour if you’re buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices stay under pressure. The CX-5’s strong safety reputation and premium feel should help support demand, especially for well-equipped trims and clean examples. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and choose a desirable configuration, you should have a better chance of holding value than with a less distinctive compact SUV.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GT adds adaptive headlights, while Signature gets the most advanced safety hardware, including a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, automatic rear braking, a driver monitoring system, and Traffic Jam Assist.

One caveat is that some of the more advanced safety features are reserved for the top trim, so you’ll want to check carefully if you’re shopping lower in the lineup.

Should I buy a 2022 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.63% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 brings premium-leaning updates, stronger driving dynamics, and a quieter, smoother ride.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,422 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,861 CAD average.
• It keeps the CX-5’s polished, upscale feel while adding enhanced technology.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $30,279 CAD, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $27,861 CAD average.
• It stays stylish and well-rounded, but adds little beyond a new premium paint option.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of value, safety, and premium feel, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better budget play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer model year and are comfortable paying more for very similar hardware.
