Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out for combining a distinctive, polarising exterior with a sense of quality that gives it real appeal. Even in a segment where consumer interest in midsize sedans has waned, it remains relevant by leaning into what it does best: strong value and a well-finished feel.
It also has a broader personality than many buyers might expect. The Sonata is described as offering tremendous value and exceptional quality, and it adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant to the mix. That combination makes it an appealing choice for shoppers who want a sedan that feels a little different from the usual mainstream options, while still delivering the practical strengths that keep it competitive.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

There are 144 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
The Sonata’s appeal comes through clearly in its strong value, exceptional quality, and broad range of trims, including a surprisingly sporty N Line. It also remains practical for everyday use, with a functional cabin and a well-rounded mix of comfort, technology, and driving manners.
With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata is presented as a well-finished, value-focused midsize sedan, and the expert assessment reinforces that it delivers a competent, serene driving experience. Its powertrains are described as straightforward and well-behaved, with the base 2.5-litre four-cylinder going about its business without complaint and the turbocharged 1.6-litre also described as adequate.
Hyundai’s five-year or 100,000 kilometre powertrain warranty adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about basic dependability and more about choosing the right trim and condition so you get the equipment you expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Preferred gives you a strong value starting point with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, LED lighting, adaptive cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more comfort and convenience, while the N Line brings the sportiest appearance and hardware.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 hp, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
- Infotainment: Base SE versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, six speakers, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, and a rear-view camera. N Line and Ultimate Hybrid trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, while Luxury also gets the 12-speaker Bose audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: NRCan combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres on lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km on the N Line. During testing, the Sonata averaged 7.7 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.
Here's the short version:
- Preferred: This is the best-value choice if you want the Sonata’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, LED lighting, and the standard safety suite.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and a few meaningful upgrades, including a panoramic sunroof, dual automatic climate control, satellite radio, and 19-inch alloy wheels.
- Luxury: This is the comfort-focused pick, with leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a more premium instrument display.
- N Line: Pick this if you want the most distinctive and performance-oriented Sonata. It adds the 290-hp turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, sport suspension, wet DCT, unique styling, a larger touchscreen with navigation, wireless charging, and Highway Drive Assist.
The safety package is comprehensive across the range, but the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid are the trims to seek out if you want the better-rated LED projector headlights.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right car.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 144 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.55% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,703 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $22,243 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,146 CAD.
That softer pricing suggests the Sonata is currently more accessible to used buyers than it was a year ago. For a future seller, that can mean less immediate upside if you buy at today’s average and try to resell soon after. On the other hand, the model’s strong value proposition and broad appeal may help support demand if you keep it in good condition and choose a desirable trim.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance. It also earned top Good ratings in all six IIHS crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
One caveat is that IIHS crash-avoidance testing rated the LED reflector headlights on most trims Marginal, while the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid with LED projector headlights earned a Good rating.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.55% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, exceptional quality, and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,112 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,243 CAD average.
- It is a rare traditional sport sedan that blends on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and trim variety, the 2022 is the better all-round pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly alternative and still brings a compelling performance-focused personality.
