Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out for combining a distinctive, polarising exterior with a sense of quality that gives it real appeal. Even in a segment where consumer interest in midsize sedans has waned, it remains relevant by leaning into what it does best: strong value and a well-finished feel.
It also has a broader personality than many buyers might expect. The Sonata is described as offering tremendous value and exceptional quality, and it adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant to the mix. That combination makes it an appealing choice for shoppers who want a sedan that feels a little different from the usual mainstream options, while still delivering the practical strengths that keep it competitive.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $25,171 CAD |

There are 155 listings available, which suggests a modest amount of inventory for you to compare.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns 4.75/5 from owners and 8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
It fits shoppers who want a midsize sedan that leans into strong value and a well-finished feel, while still offering a broader personality than many rivals. The Sonata also adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant, so you can choose between a more traditional everyday sedan and a more engaging setup.
There are 31.6% of listings priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to find a competitive example.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata is presented as a well-rounded midsize sedan with strong value, exceptional quality, and a calm, competent driving character. Its powertrains are described as adequate in the mainstream trims and more spirited in the N Line, while the cabin is noted for being a serene place to spend time.
Hyundai’s five-year or 100,000 kilometre powertrain warranty adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers. For long-term ownership, your main risk is less about outright durability and more about choosing the right trim and condition so you get the equipment and driving character you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Preferred gives you the essentials, including LED lighting, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8-inch touchscreen, and a rearview monitor. Sport adds a panoramic sunroof, revised front and rear fascias, a power driver’s seat, dual automatic climate control, satellite radio, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Luxury brings leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bose audio system, and a larger instrument display. N Line adds the most aggressive styling and the richest equipment mix, including unique 19-inch wheels, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch gauge display, and wireless phone charging.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder makes 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 290 hp, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
- Safety package: All trims include forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid, so lower trims miss those features.
- Infotainment: Base SE versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, six speakers, HD Radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB, and a 12-volt outlet. Sport adds SiriusXM and BlueLink connected services. N Line and Ultimate Hybrid upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and wireless charging.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel consumption ranges from 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the lower trims to 8.8 L/100 km for the N Line. During testing, it averaged 7.7 L/100 km.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 4 trim levels: Preferred, Sport, Luxury, and N Line.
Here's the short version:
- Preferred: This is the value-focused starting point, and it already gives you a strong equipment list with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and the core infotainment and safety features. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Sonata without giving up the essentials.
- Sport: This trim adds a panoramic sunroof, revised styling, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, satellite radio, and larger wheels. It is the best-value choice if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to Luxury.
- Luxury: This is the comfort upgrade, with leather seats, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a Bose audio system, and a larger instrument display. Choose it if you want the most relaxed daily-driver experience.
- N Line: This is the enthusiast pick, with 290 hp, a sport suspension, a wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, unique styling, a larger gauge display, wireless charging, and the most distinctive cabin and exterior treatment. It suits you best if you want the Sonata’s strongest performance and the most aggressive look.
Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid, so those features are not part of the lower gas trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have some negotiating room if you shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 155 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.44% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $21,703 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $22,290 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,171 CAD.
That softer pricing can help you as a buyer today, but it also means a future seller may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. The Sonata’s strong value proposition and broad trim range should help it remain appealing to used shoppers who want a well-equipped midsize sedan. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should be easier to position than a stripped or poorly maintained one.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five stars for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four stars for front crash protection and five stars for both side crash protection and rollover resistance. The IIHS gives it top "Good" ratings in all six crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes forward collision avoidance assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, Rear Occupant Alert, and Safe Exit Warning. Highway Driving Assist lane-centring assistance and a blind-spot view monitor are standard on N Line and Ultimate Hybrid.
One caveat is that IIHS crash avoidance and mitigation testing rated the N Line and Ultimate Hybrid with LED projector headlights as "Good", while all other trims with LED reflector headlights received a "Marginal" rating. The child-seat anchors also received an "Acceptable" rating.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.44% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, exceptional quality, and a surprisingly sporty N Line variant.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,103 CAD, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $22,290 CAD average.
- It is a rare traditional sport sedan that blends on-pavement performance with passenger and cargo practicality.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-round package, the 2022 is the better target thanks to its value, equipment, and broad trim range. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the smarter alternative for price-sensitive buyers who still want a more engaging Sonata.
