CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Hyundai Sonata
Summary
With 110 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,789 CAD, 40.0% of 2020 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Hyundai Sonata 5 / 5 stars.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Hyundai Sonata stands out as the start of Hyundai’s eighth generation, and it makes a strong first impression with curvaceous, muscular styling that is a dramatic departure from earlier Sonatas. Its low-slung, fastback shape and distinctive lighting give it a more upscale look than many buyers would expect in a midsize sedan, while the cabin backs that up with a pretty interior, ample room in the back and trunk, and a long list of standard tech and safety features. Standard equipment includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB ports, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear seat reminders, driver-attention warnings, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, heated front seats, and a heated, leather-wrapped steering wheel.
There is also real variety in the powertrain lineup. The 2020 Sonata is front-wheel drive only, but it offers a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.5-litre turbo four in the N Line with 290 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. A hybrid was also available in Canada from 2020 to 2023, producing 192 system horsepower and rated at 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres combined. That breadth helps the Sonata appeal to shoppers who want efficiency, comfort, or a bit more punch, and the model’s fuel economy is competitive, with most gas-only versions ranging between 7.7 and 8.8 L/100 km combined.
For buyers, the 2020 Sonata’s biggest strengths are its value, equipment level, and overall polish. It is described as one of the best midsize sedans on the market, with good reliability and safety rankings, and it avoids the easy-theft problem that affected the previous generation. The main trade-off is that it is not as sporty to drive as it looks, and its interior and trunk space, while above average, are still less than the Honda Accord’s. Even so, it remains a relaxed, well-equipped cruiser that feels more expensive than its price suggests.

This is my second Sonata. The first one was a 2008 at about the same trim level. I had upgraded the radio to an android tablet-based version with many of the features found in the newer model cars. The newer Sonata is great, and any comments are very minor. 1. I am still getting used to the push-button transmission and performance selection between the seats. I just leave it in normal. 2. Having the brake set with the park button is nice. I still look to see if I have to release it. 3. The larger wheels with thinner tires look good but may give a slightly rougher ride. 4. I have the base radio. It sounds great, but you need to couple it with a phone to get GPS and there is no built-in CD player. Yeah, I am an old guy. 5. I have read that the acceleration is not as good as some competitors. It is great for me and feels quicker than my much-loved 2008. 6. You might want to upgrade the Factory alarm. All in all, no buyers remorse here.

For a 1.6L it has a lot of pick up. You can really feel that turbo kick in! Inside, this thing is like a luxury car... its beautiful. Minimalism on the dash is nice and clean. It also explains all the tech on the screen which is very helpful. Overall probably the best car you can get for the price if youre looking for a little luxury in your life.

our family is into Sonatas and for a good reason the ride is like a flying carpet because of the shocks plus all the safety features we would like to meet the design team in person. Sonata limited lacks nothing for the price .

How much does the 2020 Hyundai Sonata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,896 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $18,690 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $22,497 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,584 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.33% |
Prices have softened 16.33% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 115 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of choice in the used market.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — 5/5 is a strong user rating for the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, and it lines up with the model’s appeal as a value-focused midsize sedan. Drivers consistently praise its great value, smooth ride, and abundance of features, while also appreciating the safety equipment and comfortable interior. It also fits well if you want a practical family sedan with ample room and a well-equipped cabin. With 41.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still solid market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience centred on comfort, value, and everyday usability. Drivers also highlight the car’s smooth ride and strong feature content, which suggests it is the kind of sedan you can count on for regular commuting and family use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the overall package and more about making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been well maintained.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a buyer-friendly market for the 2020 Hyundai Sonata, especially if you are comparing listings carefully and moving quickly on well-priced examples.
- Deal availability: 41.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 115 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.33% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $18,690 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $18,896 CAD sits slightly below last year's $22,584 CAD.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more attractive entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment than it would be in a rising market. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong shape, you give yourself a better chance of limiting depreciation pain later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 41.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $18,989 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $18,896 CAD average.
- It adds a sportier driving focus.
The bottom line: Choose the 2020 if you want the better value play and a broad pool of listings to compare. If you are willing to pay a bit more for a sharper driving character, the 2021 is the better secondary path for price-sensitive buyers who still want a newer Sonata.
